Week of November 18

Julian Student and Staff Goal Setting

In an effort to create a positive learning environment that focuses on developing the whole child, we are focusing on goal setting as a school. Learning how to set goals and achieve them is a skill that will benefit our students well beyond their time at Julian Middle School. Goals help us organize our time and resources. They also help motivate us in the short-term to achieve long-term success. During advisory this past week, students were taught about S.M.A.R.T. goals. These goals are Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Realistic, and Timely. Students were asked to use a goal setting template to establish a personal goal and a MAP goal for reading or math. They were prompted to establish 3 action steps to help them achieve their goal. Students also spent time thinking about obstacles that they may need to overcome during this process. There will a number of reflection days during advisory built into the goal setting cycle for students to gauge their progress. In February, students will determine whether or not they successfully accomplished their goals. We will start another goal setting cycle beginning in February and ending in June. As a way of supporting this goal setting exercise, you can ask your student about his/her goal and discuss it regularly to see if he/she is making progress.

LOST and FOUND-Julian Commons
Any clothing item or lunch bag in the Lost and Found that's labeled with a name will be returned to that student. Otherwise, the items not labeled will be donated to charity or disposed of on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 22. We have been reminding students for the past few days to take home their belongings and will continue to do so into next week. Feel free to stop by Julian on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving break if you would like to have a look for yourself.

Illinois Music Educators Association (ILMEA) Student Recognition

The following Julian music students auditioned and were selected to participate in the Illinois Music Educators Association Honors Festival on Saturday, November 5 (Jazz Festival - November 12). The band, choir, orchestra, and Jazz Band were compiled of the best musicians in our area, which includes the entire city of Chicago, western suburbs as far as Lombard, and all the way down south to Joliet. The festival day included morning rehearsals with a leading conductor in the area and a thrilling concert in the afternoon. Congratulations to the following students who received this high honor!

NOTES FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

According to the District’s Concussion policy, if a student has a head injury (in or out of school) in which an MD diagnosed a concussion, a concussion protocol has to be implemented. This protocol involves passing criteria for return to learn (RTL) and return to play (RTP).

Please inform the nurse of any head injury that may occur so we may implement the protocol.

The following is a friendly reminder to all families about lice. While lice infestation is NOT a disease and it does not spread disease, it is an expensive and time-consuming process to effectively rid a child of lice. Click here to read more....
