Supporting Students and Staff During Times of Conflict

Dear District 97 Staff and Families,

The violence that has unfolded over the last week in Israel and Gaza is horrific and heartbreaking. As disturbing events happen in the world – whether they are local or global – this is an opportunity for us in Oak Park and District 97 to lean into our values of belonging, inclusion, safety, and to elevate that strength of our diversity.

As a district serving a diversity of students, staff and families, we condemn violence in any form and at any time, hold up love and respect for all people, and envision a future of peace for our children. We also seek to be a supportive workplace for staff and a partner for families.

As a parent and fellow educator, I'm also thinking about how we support and talk to our children as these events unfold. Below are resources to help navigate that complex new challenge, including tips for limiting exposure to images of violence in the media and on social media platforms.

The experiences and perspectives of our students, staff and families matter to us very much. We welcome you to connect with us at any time using Let’s Talk.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ushma Shah
Superintendent
