Black History Month Message from the Superintendent - Feb. 9, 2024

Dear D97 Community,

The legacy of Black excellence is an integral part of world history and Oak Park history too. Let’s take the opportunity February offers to learn about and to celebrate the contributions the Black community has made and continues to make to our world.

Here are three things you can do make sure that you and your family are celebrating our shared Oak Park community heritage:

  1. VISIT! Go to the Oak Park Public Library and visit the Idea Box where this month’s exhibit is the Percy Julian Legacy Museum and highlights the life and contributions of the amazing scientist after whom one of our middle schools is named.
  2. SNAP! While you are there, snap a picture of something in the museum that finishes this sentence: “I’m proud to live in Percy Julian’s Oak Park because…”
  3. SHARE! Send your picture and your sentence to me on Let’s Talk. We will look for ways to broadcast your ideas through our D97 communication channels!

I look forward to celebrating Black history and Black excellence with you,
Dr. Shah
