In the spirit of empowering students at Julian Middle School, an IB Advisory Panel has been formed. The panel is made up of a total of 20 students. They were nominated by their teachers and represent each grade level team. These students have been given the task of representing the voice of their peers and, in response, making positive changes. They have been busy reflecting and planning since December. In addition to being the voice of the student body when issues or times for thoughtful reflection arise, each grade has set a goal to achieve this school year.
- 8th Grade - The 8th grade students felt there was room for improvement on the reflections students complete prior to conferences. The students revised the form that was used for reflection to make it more meaningful and direct. In addition, the students created an entertaining yet informative video, describing the purpose of reflection prior to conferences. Currently this group of students is creating a series of conversations to be held in advisory revolving around the idea of expressing acceptance for all.
- 7th Grade - When looking at what could be improved upon here at Julian, this group of passionate students decided the incentives for winning the weekly IB ticket drawings need to be changed. After much time brainstorming, the students scheduled a meeting with Mr. Fitzgerald to propose new prizes. Upon getting his approval, the students shared information about the new prizes with teachers and their peers to motivate them to earn and turn in their tickets. Our hope is that with these new incentives, students and teachers will be motivated to even further embody the 10 positive IB learner profile traits.
- 6th Grade - These students have been working on determining the most meaningful way to allow their peers to have authentic international learning experiences. They are in the process of creating activities in advisory for other sixth graders to complete so that they can expand their knowledge of the world.
In addition, students from multiple grade levels presented at the incoming sixth grade parent IB information night and also provided an IB update to the school board. This group of motivated, reflective students has already had a huge impact on the culture and climate here at Julian Middle School. They continue to seek out opportunities to leave their positive footprint on our building.
