Newsletter for Week of October 8th

Dear Julian Families,

I want to remind everyone that school will not be in session tomorrow and Monday.  We are off as a result of a teacher professional learning day and Columbus Day. School will be back in session Tuesday, October 13.

Julian Twitter

For all of you twitter users, please follow our twitter feed at #julianmiddleschool and #oakpark97.  There are a number of Julian and District 97 staff members that are tweeting information about our school and district.

Curriculum on a Wall

Teachers at Julian recently completed an activity at a staff meeting that involved having all departments create a curriculum map for their entire grade level. The purpose of this was to further explore opportunities to develop interdisciplinary units and make connections between IB Global Contexts that are being taught throughout the school year.

Data Dives

Within the past few days, teachers started examining MAP data in order to better inform us of our students’ learning needs. We will use this data, along with formative and summative assessments, to create learning opportunities that are meeting the academic and needs of all our students. We are also analyzing discipline data regularly in order to target areas for our building that we need to improve upon. This information will enable to us continually work toward providing our students with a safe and caring environment that is conducive for learning.

Music Students Recognized

The Music Department is excited to announce that over 40 students that auditioned were accepted to participate in the ILMEA (Illinois Music Educators Association) Honors Band, Choir, and Orchestra. Hundreds of students from schools in the area tried out for these ensembles and once again Percy Julian Middle School will be represented by a group of fine musicians. The ILMEA Festival will be held on Saturday, November 7 at Lockport Township East High School.
