Reflective Learners at Julian Middle School
Part of our approach with IB focuses on students being reflective learners. Prior to parent/teacher conferences last week, we had students spend a few minutes each period reflecting on their strengths and areas they may want to improve upon as it relates to their classes. They specifically considered the IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) categories that include Communication, Social, Self Management, Research, and Thinking. We will be asking our students to do this on at least one or two more occasions throughout the school year. Our goal is to have them growing and developing in these areas.
Art Start at Julian Middle School
We recently had a guest Artist come in and work with Mr. Magierski, one of our own art teachers, to combine efforts to provide students with a very engaging learning opportunity. This was a great example of Julian working with the Oak Park Education Foundation (OPEF) to enhance student learning in D97. Click here to find out more and see images of the project that our students completed.
Art Club mural celebrating IB Global Contexts
The Art Club was asked to create a mural to be displayed in a public space at the school celebrating the Global Contexts related to IB. Two eighth grade students submitted a design and committed to the task. Adel H. and Remi G. worked for three months during their lunch, after school, and during art club to finish an eight-foot by eight foot painting on canvas. The dramatic results depict the theme of orientation in time, space, globalization and sustainability in a contemporary and original style.
These student artists were supported by art club sponsor and teacher Edd Magierski, along with many of their friends who added countless details to the overall work.
The mural is currently displayed in the library until it finds the permanent location in the corridors of Julian Middle School.
Cap and Gown Order for 8th Graders
8th grade parents/guardians who have not placed a cap & gown order for their student will now have until November 13 to pay online. Any 8th grader participating in the graduation ceremony will need a cap, gown, and 2016 tassel. If you plan to use a cap and gown from a sibling, you still need to purchase and place your order for a 2016 tassel by Friday, November 13.
