Week of March 23

LOST and FOUND will be Donated or Discarded on March 24

Clothing, lunch boxes, and other items left on the lost and found tables in the commons will either be donated or discarded on the afternoon of Thursday, March 24 at 4:15pm. We cannot leave lunch boxes and remnants of food in the commons over spring break. This would attract rodents to our building.  We have been reminding our students for the past two weeks to take home their belongings. Feel free to stop by the building on or before March 24 if you would like to have a look for yourself.

PARCC Assessment

Please find PARCC communication from our state attached.

Julian students will take the PARCC assessment April 18–28.

As is required by law, every student who is eligible to take the PARCC assessment must be presented with a test ticket for each of the six test units (three for ELA and three for Math). In keeping with the practice we implemented last year, any individual who elects not to take the assessment will be permitted to read a book after the teacher has read the directions to the class and students have begun the testing process. Since students will not be allowed to go to the school library during the administration of the test, we ask that you please make sure your child brings his/her book to class during the PARCC testing window.

In addition to PARCC, public school students in grades five, eight and 10 will be required to take a new assessment this year that is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. The test will be administered in late spring via a computer-based platform, and is estimated to take no more than 60 minutes to complete. The Illinois State Board of Education is expected to provide additional information about this assessment in the days ahead. We will share this information when it is available.

Julian/Brooks Poetry Slam a Huge Success

Our first ever OPEF Poetry Slam was held last Friday evening at the School of Rock--it was a huge success! Parents, teachers, and supporters enjoyed the performances of nearly twenty Julian and Brooks students in front of a packed house. Each student performed a memorized slam piece that ranged from topics on bullying to experiences of loss to education. Students encouraged each other from both schools to get their voices heard at the first ever event of this kind for D97. The following students from Julian performed:

Robyn Williams, Brandon Stiffic, Leo Angelini, Jamael Brabson-Perteet, Taylor Morris, Josh Cotter, Kaylin Corotis, Jontavion Hunt, Gianna Perez, Emmanuel Crawford, Rahsaan Nance, and Mekylah Holloway

These two students earned the highest points from the judges:

Runner-up: Taylor Morris-“They Say Stereotypes”

Winner: Jamael Brabson-Perteet—“New School”

We are so proud of you all!
