Newsletter for Week of April 15

Week of April 15

Julian students will take the PARCC assessment starting on Monday, April 18 and ending Thursday, April 28. Click here for the testing schedule.

As is required by law, every student who is eligible to take the PARCC assessment must be presented with a test ticket for each of the six test units (three for ELA and three for Math). In keeping with the practice we implemented last year, any individual who elects not to take the assessment will be permitted to read a book after the teacher has read the directions to the class and students have begun the testing process. Since students will not be allowed to go to the school library during the administration of the test, we ask that you please make sure your child brings his/her book to class during the PARCC testing window.

In addition to PARCC, public school students in grades five, eight and 10 will be required to take a new assessment this year that is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards. The test will be administered in late spring via a computer-based platform, and is estimated to take no more than 60 minutes to complete. The Illinois State Board of Education is expected to provide additional information about this assessment in the days ahead. We will share this information when it is available.

Community Conversations

District 97 is seeking the community’s assistance with the development of a collective vision that will shape the future of our schools and contribute to the success of our students. I am writing to you today to ask you to be part of this important endeavor.

During the last several months, District 97 Superintendent Carol Kelley has met with a number of stakeholders (e.g., educators, students, families, Oak Park residents, etc.) in an effort to better understand their perspectives on the needs and interests of the district. Click here to read more....

Research for Better Teaching (RBT) Parent Sessions

Earlier in the year I invited all of our parents/guardians to participate in learning sessions focusing on Growth Mindset, Effective Effort, and Goal Setting. Thus far, we have had evening workshops that occurred in January and March.  I am providing you with information related to the topics that we have covered with our parent attendees.  Feel free to look over these materials on Growth Mindset and Effective Effort.  You may decide to put some of these ideas into practice with your student(s).

Sincerely,

Dr. Todd T. Fitzgerald
