Parent-Teacher Conferences/Thursday, October 20

Parents/Guardians will be receiving information from their student's grade level team leader to sign up for parent teacher conferences. You will get an email from SignUp.com that will enable you to schedule a conference with your student's teacher. These conferences are led by our students. Over the next two weeks, students will spend some time reflecting on their organization and communication skills. They will complete a reflection form that will be the focal point of the conference. Students will be collecting work samples from various classes to share during the conference. They will also have a premeeting with their teacher in order to ensure that they are prepared and ready to lead this important conference.

Julian students attend International Manufacturing Trade Show

Weighed down with bags of swag and minds full of ideas, many Julian Vex Robotics Club students got a respite from the classroom a couple of weeks ago to learn from industry leaders in robotic based manufacturing at the International Manufacturing Trade Show.

When this group of 42 students and 11 parents first entered the bustling floors of McCormick Place, their eyes were as big as saucers and smiles ran from ear to ear. They were eager to run the grounds and see what the world of machines making machines had to offer. Our students were all surprised by the sheer scope of what businesses are doing with a little programming, a little know how, and a whole lot of money.

They mingled and picked the brains of industry pioneers at the bleeding edge of robotics manufacturing. It was difficult to not be impressed with the self-driving sensor cars, the 3D printed automobiles, and of course the soft serve ice cream robot.

Overall, it was a great day and I think everyone would agree that seeing what STEM can do left us all a little hungry for some more knowledge and maybe one more ice cream cone.

Upcoming CAST Performance

Don't miss CAST on TOUR at Beye School (230 North Cuyler Ave) on Friday, October 21 and Saturday, October 22 at 7:30PM. Tickets are $10/$5 and open to the general public here. This year an all Julian student company will be presenting a revival of this summer's very popular Schoolhouse Rock Live musical featuring catchy tunes and energetic dancing about all your favorite classes for our friends at Beye School!

The first production crew call will be on Saturday October 29 from 10-Noon in the Julian Auditorium. All Julian students are welcome and no sign up is necessary. Find out what being backstage is all about. We do a lot of painting and moving things so DRESS FOR A MESS! If you have questions please contact Kathy at [email protected].

Julian Book Fair

The Julian Book Fair is almost here! Join us in the Commons on Wednesday, October 19 (3:00-4:30), Thursday, October 29 (8:00-8:00) and Friday, October 30 (8:00-12:30). Anderson’s Books will be providing an outstanding selection in a nice range of prices. We will be rounding up and not charging tax (e.g. a $4.99 paperback will cost $5). There will be raffles for students and a wish board for teachers’ classroom libraries.

Families, please consider sharing some of your time to help us make our book fair successful. We need your help! If you are interested in volunteering, you can sign up through this link. Renee Haas, Amy Werthmann, and Suzanne Drews make up our parent volunteer Book Fair Committee powerhouse.

Our book fair will be a wonderful way to celebrate reading and continue to nurture life-long readers. Proceeds will go back to our Julian Library. As always, thank you for your support!

Mock Election

Julian students will have the opportunity to vote in a school-wide mock election during the week of October 24. Our Library will turn into a polling place with actual voting booths generously provided by the Oak Park League of Women Voters. Students can digitally cast their votes for Presidential and Congressional races using The Youth Leadership Initiative’s online mock election. We will share the results on Friday, October 28.

Picture Retakes

School picture re-takes will be Friday, October 14. Due to the City Chase field trip, 8th grade re-takes will occur at 9:00 AM. Students who were absent on September 2 are on our list to be photographed that day. Students who do not like their original photo and would like a new picture taken should ask their advisory teacher to add them to the re-take list. These students should turn in their original photo package to the photographer at the time of re-takes.
