2nd Annual OPEF "Respect the Mic" Poetry Slam (Equitable, Whole Child)
Oak Park Education Foundation's 2nd Annual "Respect the Mic" Poetry Slam was held last Tuesday evening at the School of Rock--it was a huge success! Families, teachers, and supporters enjoyed the performances of fifteen Julian and Brooks students in front of a packed house. Each student performed a memorized slam piece on topics ranging from the fear of not being good enough to the feeling of having a voice to life's experiences in this time and place. Students encouraged each other from both schools to get their voices heard and impressed their coaches, Mr. Colucci and Mrs. Fleming. The following students from Julian performed:
Della Bonigut, Joseph Cote, Emmanuel Crawford, Lilah Grove, Mekylah Holloway, Elanor Huber, Taylor Morris, Maya Souden, Brandon Stiffic, and Matthew Zochowski.
1st Place-Maya Souden (6th Grade) Poem "Undo"
3rd Place-Mekylah Holloway and Taylor Morris (8th Grade) Poem "Grow Up"
Misericordia 2017 = Success (Positive Learning Environment, Whole Child)
We know from years of supporting Misericordia that Julian students are experts at getting money out of adults. The mission of Misericordia is to support children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing the highest quality residential, training, and employment services. Over the past 4 years we have raised over $13,000 for this cause. This afternoon, over 60 students and staff members from Julian Middle School will be out pounding the pavement for a few hours to pass out candy and collect donations. Great job, in advance, to all those that are participating to support this organization.
37th Annual Ethnic Festival (Positive Learning Environment, Whole Child, Inclusive, Equitable)
The 37th Annual Ethnic Festival and World Languages Day will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at Julian Middle School from 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM. Please save the date!
We have been adding more and more interactive audience participation experiences so you can watch performances, shop, eat, dance and play all day. Last year was a blast. I hope you will join us on that day. Everyone is welcome and it is a great family friendly event! As always, there is no admission charge, and the activities are free. Food and cultural items will be on sale throughout the day as well.
Tribute to Excellence (Positive Learning Environment, Whole Child, Inclusive, Equitable)
We will have our annual "Tribute to Excellence" program on the morning of Thursday, June 1 starting at 9:15. On this day, students are honored for going above and beyond inside and outside of the classroom. The students being recognized will receive an invitation to attend the program during advisory within the next couple of weeks. An email blast will also be sent to the parents/guardians of these students inviting them to be a part of the program. Some of the activities students will be recognized for are as follows:
Math Club, West 40 Speech and Drama Festival, Choir, Orchestra, Band, Art Contest Winners, Track and Field State Qualifiers/Champions, Robotics team, Volleyball, Basketball, Spoken Word, Best Buddies, and many more.
The program typically lasts about 75-90 minutes. We hope that many of you will join us here at Julian Middle School on the morning of Thursday, June 1 to recognize our students.
