Newsletter for Week of August 24

Dear Julian Families,

We are off to a great start this school year! As a staff, we spent a considerable amount of time these first days focusing on creating a positive learning environment for all our students. I am very pleased with how things are going thus far.  Students have been provided a number of opportunities to connect with their teachers and classmates, learn about our expectations, and understand that everyone plays an important role in creating a strong culture and climate here at school. As the year progresses, I will be sharing "Middle Matters" newsletters with you that provide information about Julian Middle School.  You can expect these every 2-3 weeks. Please check out the information below regarding the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, the middle school grading and assessment policy, food allergy safety guidelines, school attendance, and much more.

Why International Baccalaureate?

The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective learners. See this graphic that outlines the top 10 reasons why IB is amazing!

Middle School Grading and Assessment Policy

Last spring, middle school administrators and teachers reviewed our grading and assessment policy. We made some changes in order to have more consistent practices for redos and retakes throughout the building. Please take some time to read this document.

Food Allergy Safety Guidelines

Please click the link below to learn more about the Food Allergy Safety Guidelines for D97 and Julian Middle School.

We appreciate your partnership in promoting the health and safety of our students.

Attendance Matters

One of the goals we have as a district is for 90% or more of our students to have 95% attendance or better for the entire school year. Included in this document is important information about the impact school attendance has on learning and what you can do to support your student to be here everyday.

Positive Learning Environment - Julian Middle School

Percy Julian Middle School spent welcome week teaching a new set of school wide behavioral expectations to students and staff.  These expectations were created by the Julian community with contributions from staff and students during the 2017- 2018 school year. Teaching our expectations at the beginning of the year helps ensure that all our students understand how we operate at Julian in order to have a positive learning environment.

Families can access our expectations on our website.
