Green Team - Trout in the Classroom Program

As an International Baccalaureate, we aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

Last year, the Julian Green Team decided to act on this mission and advocated for a Green Space at Julian.  They developed and built an outdoor school garden and its success has fueled their passion do more for our environment. Next year they will bring that passion to the Trout In the Classroom program (TIC).

The Green Team will monitor the tank and eggs within a 6th grade General Education Science classroom. The 6th grade students will be engaged in habitat studies, conservation, and in developing their knowledge of ecosystems. Next year, the Green Team will the release the trout in the Northern Illinois Stream. This is a great real-life, hands-on experience focusing on biology and habitat education.  The goal is to have our Green Team students connect to nature, their local watershed, the environment, and become stewards for ecology and sustainability.

Kate T. Parker – 7th Grade Presentation

Julian Middle School and Anderson's Books are pleased to announce photographer Kate T. Parker's visit on April 17th. During 1st period, all 7th grade students will hear her presentation. Parker's new book, The Heart of a Boy, tackles our expectations and hopes for boyhood. Two years ago, Parker visited the 6th grade to talk about The Strength of a Girl. These books contain arresting full-page portraits and inspiring quotes from the photographed. Learn more about Parker's work at katetparker.com/

Anyone can order a copy of The Heart of a Boy or Strong is the New Pretty. Orders placed in the Julian Library by Tuesday afternoon can be personalized. Signed copies of The Heart of a Boy will be available after the event.

Smart Phones in School

Please remind your student that they should not be using their phone during the school day unless given permission by a teacher. These devices are increasingly turning into a greater and greater distraction to our learning environment here at Julian Middle School. Often times conflict between students occurs as a result of the inappropriate use of social media such as Snapchat, Instagram, and others. As a reminder, phones are to be turned off at all times during the school day and stored in a safe place that is out of sight. Staff will request that phones are put away if seen during school time in the building. They may also take phones away from students and return them at the end of the school day. Multiple infractions may require the parent/guardian to pick up the phone. Finally, please contact the main office at Julian (708) 524-3040 if you need to communicate with your child during the school day. We frequently have students on their phones stating that they are texting or talking to a parent/guardian. We appreciate your support related to this matter!
