Newsletter for Week of September 6

Julian Middle School Curriculum Night - Thursday, September 12

I am inviting you to our curriculum night on Thursday, September 12. The first session with teachers will begin promptly at 6:00 pm. The program will end at approximately 7:45. The night will provide an opportunity for you to meet teachers and experience your child’s daily schedule. The presentations will focus on the curriculum and what students will learn this school year. Due to the number of adults that will be in attendance and the size of our classrooms, we respectfully request that students do not attend.

We will send an electronic copy of your student’s schedule via email on Wednesday. You can use your smart-phone or other tech device so that you have access to the schedule on Thursday night. You will need this to navigate the building to attend all of the classes your student has in a typical school day. If you are unable to access the schedule electronically, we will have hard copies available in the commons.

School Wide Behavior Expectations

The 3 overarching expectations we have at Julian Middle School is to Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe. Please check out the Julian Middle School Behavior Matrix that has been shared with all of our students and staff.

Julian Middle School - Communication Flowchart

Please refer to this flowchart when needing to contact someone at school for classroom related questions or issues. There may be times when it is necessary to reach out to a social worker, administrator, attendance clerk, or other personnel. Please start with your child’s teacher if you have a question about academics or any other matter that occurred within the classroom.

Second Step - Social Emotional Learning Curriculum

We want your child to be successful in school, and that means going beyond the basics. Excelling in academic classes is important, but students also need to know how to learn, make good decisions, handle strong emotions, and get along with others. On Monday we will began the Second Step Middle School Program, which focuses on skills and concepts that are designed to help students both in and out of school. Topics include:

  • Mindsets and Goals: Students learn about ways to grow their brains and get smarter, along with research-based strategies for achieving goals and handling difficult situations.
  • Values and Friendships: Students learn to identify their personal values and use those values to make good decisions and build strong, positive relationships.
  • Thoughts, Emotions, and Decisions: Students learn the positive role emotions play in their lives, how to handle unhelpful thoughts and strong emotions, and specific strategies for calming down.
  • Serious Peer Conflicts: Students learn how to identify and avoid serious conflicts, resolve conflicts that can't be avoided, think about other people's perspectives, and help stop bullying and harassment at school.

If you have any questions about the Second Step Middle School Program, please do not hesitate to contact me for more information. Thank you for supporting your child in learning the skills and concepts that lead to success in school and in life.

Nurse Wampler - Julian Family Welcome Letter

The 2019-2020 school year is quickly upon us. In order to have a productive and enjoyable school year we must work together to keep our students safe and healthy.  I wanted to send out the following information to help us achieve this together: Click here to read more…...

Away for the Day - Cell Phones

Students are doing a fantastic job as it relates to meeting our expectations for keeping cell phones “Away for the Day.” There have only been 4-5 cell phones turned into the office the last few days of school. I am very proud of our students for doing such a terrific job of meeting our expectations.. Having cell phones away and out of sight eliminates a big distraction from learning for many of our students. We are off to a great start!

CAST Update

CAST Auditions are Thursday, September 12 at 3:30PM and all Julian students are welcome!  In order to audition students and their families must complete an online permission packet which has lots of great information about participation in CAST and the thoughtful season of plays we will present at Julian this year.  Check it out at www.op97.org/cast.

Students interested in working backstage on the Julian CREW do not need to audition but should attend the first CREW call on Saturday, October 26 at 10am in the Julian Auditorium.  The rest of the 2019-20 crew dates are available on the CAST website at www.op97.org/cast.
