Newsletter for the week of December 6

Julian Culture and Climate

Thank you to our librarian Mrs. Winchell for her sessions honoring Native American History month in November!  Classrooms visited the library to view artifacts, read historical and current information and explore virtual reality.

Changes to Visitor Management Procedures at Julian Middle School Coming Soon

Continued safety inside our school buildings is one of the highest priorities for District 97 schools. We are committed to identifying and investing in new resources to further protect our students and staff. With your help, we are set to launch a new feature to better screen visitors who come into our buildings. Click this link to learn more.

Social Media Ambassadors

District 97 is seeking social media ambassadors who are willing to share news and information about our efforts to support all students. Whether you are sharing posts from our Facebook or Twitter pages or shouting out a teacher or student, being a social media ambassador is great way to be part of the "MyD97" campaign and support District 97 schools! If you are interested in being an ambassador for the 2019-20 school year, please complete our online form. If you have any questions, please email the district's director of communications, Amanda Siegfried, at [email protected].

Parent University Registration Form

I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday.  We are preparing for the D97 Parent University that will be held on Saturday, December 14 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Lincoln Elementary School. The theme of Parent University is Cozy up to Curriculum. Our focus is to help families understand more about our curriculum and how to assist their child at home.  Families will receive the opportunity to attend three 40-minute sessions of their choice.

For more information and/or to sign up, please click on the Parent University Registration Form .  Thank you in advance.

Mindful Middle Schoolers - DePaul Partnership

Thank you for either registering for or attending any of the six community talks that were offered by DePaul University – Family and Community Services - as part of the Mindful Middle Schoolers program. It has been enjoyable for me and my team to meet you over the past several months to discuss various important topics related to the emotional health of our youth! The more we learn and talk about mental health, the more we are able to break down the barriers of stigma and shame than many experience. Please share these resources with your family, friends, colleagues, and children. Many of you have reached out requesting copies of the full slides. The slides for all 6 talks are attached.

Anxiety in Youth

Understanding Depression

Executive Functioning

Mindfulness Community

Social Emotional Talk

Technology and Mental Health

In addition, many of you have had questions about how parents might be able to refer their children for consideration to the school-based mindfulness group programs. Both Brooks and Julian have a parent referral form which can be accessed here: Parent/Guardian requesting for assistance form. If you have additional questions please feel free to reach out to me, your school administration, social worker, or teacher team lead. Dr. Victoria Doobay, PhD is the DePaul clinician assigned to Brooks and Mr. David Walker, MSW, LSW is the DePaul clinician assigned to Julian. Both clinicians have active open groups. Referrals are reviewed by a team of administrators, social worker(s), and DePaul team members to determine goodness of fit (the DePaul programming is focused primarily on youth who are experiencing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and executive functioning (inattention).

WE NEED YOUR FEEDBACK/INPUT: The Oak Park Township is currently considering our request for continued funding during the 2020-21 school year. Your input would be extremely helpful in reporting back to the Township and D97 and to further improve and refine our programming. If you attended one of the events, please be sure to complete a very, very brief evaluation by clicking on the links below.
