Message from October 5, 2017

We have enjoyed some beautiful weather this past week mixed with a bit of rain. In the event of rain or inclement weather, we ask you to bring students to the playground doors no earlier than 7:50. We will have staff available to help them to their designated area. Kindergarten and first graders will report to the lunchroom. All other grades will report to their seats in the auditorium until teachers pick them up at 8am

You may have already received communication from your child’s teacher regarding conferences, which will be held the week of October 16th. Our amazing PTO will be providing child care on our late night, Thursday the 19th from 12:30-7pmStudents will be dismissed at 10:55am both Thursday the 19th andFriday the 20th. While you are here for conferences, please take a moment to check the Lost and Found. All items not claimed with be donated to families in need after conference week. Also, please write your child’s name in any item that might find it’s way to the Lost and Found.

As many of you know, last year the Hatch Steel Band made a viral video that received millions of view as well as TV and radio play all over the Chicagoland area and beyond.  We are going to make a sequel this year and a permission slip was sent home with your child yesterday.  However, there was a mistake on the date.  The correct date for the filming of the video is next Thursday, October 12th from 3:00-3:30pm.  In order for your child to be in the video, we will need the permission slip filled out and returned no later than Wednesday, October 11th.  Also, please make arrangements for how your child will get home after the filming is done at 3:30pm.  The filming will finish on the blacktop.

Go Cubs Go!

Each year we strive to improve the school experience we provide to our students. In order to do so, we need your input. I’d like to invite parents to a “Coffee with the Principal” on Wednesday, October 11th at 8am in the library. This is an informal gathering. Please feel free to stay 5 minutes or 45 minutes as your schedule permits and be sure to sign in at the main office. See you then!

If your child attended school but will be absent from an HAH or Apollo program, please send an email with the subject “Attendance - HAH/Apollo” to Natisha at [email protected] and Allecyn at [email protected].

Illinois Great Apple Crunch

On Thursday, October 12, Hatch Elementary students, along with students from across the state of Illinois and Great Lakes region, will participate in the Great Apple Crunch to celebrate National Farm to School Month by crunching into locally grown apples. All students from Hatch Elementary will be provided with an opportunity to taste a locally-grown apple either through the school-provided lunch or by visiting the Wellness Committee's table during the lunch hour to obtain an apple. All students will be encouraged to learn more about apples' nutritional benefits. For instance, did you know that apples contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol and are a good source of fiber? Apples are also a good source of vitamin C! Find fun ways to incorporate apples into your diet this October. Check out this recipe for butternut squash and apple soup courtesy of the Food Network: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/butternut-squash-and-apple-soup-recipe-1915002

The apples provided to Hatch students are grown at Rendleman Orchards in Alto Pass, Illinois: www.rendlemanorchards.com.

The Illinois Great Apple Crunch, as part of the Great Lakes Apple Crunch, encourages healthy eating and supports farm to school and local food initiatives throughout the Great Lakes region. For more information on the event, visit: Illinois Great Apple Crunch.
