Hello Hatch Families,
Thank you to everyone who came out on a rainy Tuesday to attend the PTO meeting. We discussed our school improvement plan and the difference between bullying and social conflict. If you missed this month’s meeting you can check out the video recap by our amazing PTO presidents. All of the presentation materials will be posted on the Hatch webpage. Here's the link to the video: https://youtu.be/HXHcmnXROKo
We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the Halloween Disco tonight! Please remember there is no drop off at this event. All parents are responsible for attending with their children. There will be a haunted hallway, music, a costume contest, a sensory room for students who may need a break, and much much more! Thank you to our many parent volunteers who make this special night possible. Please see PTO reminders below for more details.
As we gear up for Tuesday, here are a few Halloween reminders:
~Lunch is from 12-12:55 Students will change into costumes after lunch.
~The Parade will begin at 1:30. We will exit through the west playground doors and head south on Ridgeland, then east on Berkshire and then north on Harvey back to school. Please stand on the grass to take pics and cheer us on!
~If you are coming in after the parade to volunteer in the classroom, please be sure to sign in and get a visitor’s badge at the main office.
~No weapons, scary masks/props, or culturally insensitive costumes. Please see the attachments from Lynn Allen and information to remind us that cultures are not costumes.
~All food items must have been pre-approved by the nurse two weeks in advance. Food free celebrations are encouraged. The safety of our students is of the utmost importance.
~Any families that prefer their child(ren) not take part in the Halloween celebrations please speak with your child’s teacher about the alternate activity.
Looking forward to celebrating with our amazing Hatch community!
We're a Culture Not a Costume2
Note from Ms. Klemp:
Dear Hatch Families,
In Spanish and Art class we are learning about “El Día de los Muertos,” or in English, “The Day of the Dead.” This is the Mexican equivalent of the American Memorial Day. The Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. Mexican families spend those days at the cemetery, planting flowers and washing and repairing the headstones of loved ones. The favorite foods of the deceased are prepared and brought to the cemetery, to be eaten by the family. The atmosphere is a happy and festive one, because they believe that the spirits of their departed relatives have gone on to a better life. Mexican families spend the night between November 1st and 2nd in the cemeteries, eating and dancing, and talking with friends and relatives. Discussing the Day of the Dead in class is meant to raise students’ awareness of the practices of other cultures.
Sincerely,
Casey Klemp

Here’s a note about one of the newest classes PROJECT WILD (2nd-5th graders) from Heather who manages our Hatch Patch: “This is a highly regarded curriculum to get kids outside into nature. ‘The kids will be engaged in hands-on activities that encourage problem solving and decision- making skills about the environment and wildlife. The class will focus on various concepts such as wild and domesticated animals, endangered species, food chains, habitats/habitats loss, predator/prey and human responsibilities. There is a lot of material, so each session will have different activities.’”
Some other great offerings including Digital Photography, Hatch Hockey & Hoops (floor hockey and basketball), plenty of art offerings, even Taekwondo in the gym.
And 4th grade steel band families – reminder to sign you child up for the next session!

Making Math fun and great again!
Calling all volunteers to help with the Math-A-thon lunch program. Math-A-thon builds mathematics skills through fun and engaging activities. Mondays (K-1st graders), Thursdays (2-3rd Grade) and Fridays (4th and 5th). The kids have been asking for this lunch program to return, and with your help parents we can fulfill that request!
Our plan is to meet three times per week, but we are not asking for more than one hour per week per volunteer. Ideally, we are looking for 6-8 parent volunteers to rotate days. Sign up here: http://signup.com/go/fxAXLzs Questions? Email [email protected] or 312.714.9533
