Message from December 8, 2017

Report Cards come home today! Please be on the lookout for our newly reformatted report card. If you would like more information on the specific changes please access our presentation on the Hatch webpage at webpage.

The Hatch Steel Band students have been working hard on preparing for the Steel Band Winter Concert. We hope you can join us in watching their upcoming performance on Tuesday, December 12th at 6pm.

Congratulations to all the teams for participating in the Fall 2017 Reading Olympics! Today we had one of our 6 teams competing in the district wide competition this afternoon at the Oak Park Public Library and came in 4th place of the 2nd round. They all did a great job and should be commended for all their hard work this Fall. Here at Hatch we had 2 rounds with many great questions for the 9 books they read this fall.

Our teachers have been working hard this year in leading the continued implementation of both Reading and Writing Units of Study in their classrooms. This week we had fellow educators from other Oak Park schools observing our teachers in action, to learn about our instructional practices. Kudos Hatch teachers!

As the weather turns cooler and we begin to bundle up, it is very important to label your child’s outerwear, lunchboxes and other items. All labeled items are easily returned to students. If your child has misplaced an unlabeled item, please check the lost and found bin in the main entrance vestibule.

PTO REMINDERS

Learning with the PTO: Did you know a post-it is one way teachers can check what your child knows? Here are the presentations given at the recent PTO Meeting about Assessments used with students at Hatch which yes, include Post-its. We also learned about the new report card format. Our next PTO meeting is January 16, 2018, and includes a presentation on using the internet safely with your child.

Open positions to help Hatch PTO support our students and staff

The PTO is in need of several volunteers to fill important roles at Hatch. Please email [email protected] if interested. Here are the current openings:

Box Tops:

The PTO is looking for a parent to chair the Box Tops for Education program at Hatch. Box tops are collected in the main office and then the chair counts, enters the numbers online, and mails the box tops so the school can collect money. This is an easy position that has very flexible hours.

Golf Outing:

The PTO is looking for a parent or small group of parents to chair the PTO Golf Outing that takes place in the fall. Planning starts in the spring for this well-organized event. If you like golf and planning events then this position is for you!

Allergy Position:

The PTO is looking for a volunteer to be Food Allergy Chairperson. This person should have current knowledge of food allergens. We are looking for someone to serve as a resource for PTO-sponsored after hours events that contain food, such as Taste of Hatch Patch, Movie Matinee, Halloween Disco, and Fun Fair. The goal is for this person to work with the chairs or committees for each event so that an appropriate option for kids with food allergies is provided and that the events feel safe and inclusive to all.  This could include ensuring there is a packaged snack offering that is allergy-friendly and providing ingredient lists for prepared foods.  This is a new role and the volunteer who takes it on will be able to help shape it for the future.

Please email Beth Sauers at [email protected] if interested in serving.

Math-A-Thon permission slip: Here is the online link if your child would like to participate in Math-A-Thon during lunch one day a week.
