Message from January 19, 2018

Thank you to all the parents who came out to the PTO meeting on Tuesday to hear about internet safety and how we use technology to leverage learning from

Mr. Arensdorff, our D97 Senior Director of Technology.

On Wednesday our students enjoyed the privilege of a performance from Opera for the Young while our teachers enjoyed a professional learning opportunity

after school. Sunday Cummins, a well known expert in the field of literacy instruction, designed a workshop just for Hatch teachers around supporting students’

comprehension and independence with nonfiction texts and across multiple sources. So exciting!

Hatch's All-School Science Fair will be held Thursday, April 12, 2018. Individuals, sibling groups, and other team partnerships are welcome and encouraged to

sign up. Science Fair projects are done outside of school, and are a wonderful way for students to practice the Scientific Method and explore a topic of their choice.

Please direct any questions to Science Fair chairperson Lynda Ficca, 5th grade teacher, at: [email protected].  Information on how to find a project and how to

conduct a Science Fair experiment will be posted shortly on the Hatch website.

Please be sure to complete the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This is a unique opportunity to not only provide feedback to the school and district, but to support

Hatch on a larger scale. It should only take approximately 10 minutes to complete, and we are currently at 35%. Mann school has challenged us to a

competition around parent participation, so please help us reach our goal. Thank you for your support!

To take the survey:

January is a time when we “take the temperature” on our students’ progress to ensure we are designing instructional experiences to meet the needs of each

individual learner. Our MAP testing for 3rd-5th graders will begin next week. As with every school day, please be sure your child has gotten a good night’s rest

and eaten a healthy breakfast as they head off to school on time! The specific testing days and times are listed below for your information.

3-5th Grades

Tuesday, January 23rd at 8:30am : Math

Wednesday, January 24th at 8:30am : ELA

As we are in the midst of cold and flu season, please remind your child about the importance of handwashing. Please also make sure your child has a warm coat

they can zip or button independently as well as a hat, scarf, and warm gloves. When snow arrives boots and snow pants are a great choice to avoid wet, cold feet

and pants. Students also need to bring gym shoes for PE if they are walking to school in boots. Thank you for your help

in making sure the kids are warm and comfortable in the cold weather!

Reminder: Next Friday. January 26th is a Teacher Institute Day so there will be no classes for students.
