This week a group of our students presented at the D97 School Board meeting on their perspective of Second Step, our curriculum to support healthy social emotional development. We are so proud of our young scholars! We also had a very successful lock down drill with the goal being that everyone know what to do in the event of an emergency. This drill enables us to practice sheltering all students, staff and visitors inside the building should there be any danger present in or around the building. Teachers and staff explained that this type of lockdown would occur if a situation arose when we needed to ensure everyone (students, staff, and visitors) was safe inside the building, but did not focus any one particular scenario. Our students did a wonderful job practicing our safety procedures!
We’ve noticed an increase in students arriving late to school. In order to ensure students are taking advantage of the powerful instruction please be sure your child is on the playground by 7:55. Even in inclement weather, students should be entering through the playground doors. After the 8 o’clock bell, students should enter through the main office. If your child is going to be late please call or email the office before 9am, if they will need a hot lunch. Lunch orders are submitted daily at 9am.
When students arrive late, it disrupts the learning for the entire class. Thank you for your support as we strive to provide the very best learning experience for our children.
March marks the start of National Nutrition Month in the United States, and the Wellness Committee will be celebrating and promoting healthy eating at Hatch throughout the month. At the end of the month, students will have the opportunity to participate in food tastings in the cafeteria during the lunch hour. Our Wellness Committee will be serving frozen fruit popsicles on a toothpick made up grapes and blueberries. Students may also sample a natural, healthy alternative to regular soda- R.W. Knudsen Family Juice in pomegranate or black cherry mixed with seltzer water. Parents can contact Nurse Rossi with any questions. Look for photos and nutrition tips to be shared throughout the month, and don’t forget to P.A.C.K nutritious, colorful fruits and vegetables in your child’s lunches!
Reminder-PARCC Testing Dates
Beginning this Monday March 5th, our third, fourth and fifth grade students will take part in the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers testing (PARCC). Fifth graders will also participate in the Illinois Science Assessment. We are excited that testing will be web based again this year, which will give students the opportunity to build experience with testing on a computer in a comfortable environment. We have limited our testing window to two weeks for each grade level. Please see the schedule below.
Students should make every effort to be present and on time to school during the testing window. Should an illness or unforeseen absence occur, the student will participate in make-up testing. Parents, please assist your child in being prepared for testing. Eating breakfast, being well-rested, and on time will help your student to do his or her best. Discussing the importance of the test while minimizing any anxieties your child may be feeling is helpful as well. As is required by law, every student who is eligible to take the PARCC assessment will receive a test ticket or test booklet. However, in accordance with our practice, anyone who elects not to take the assessment will be permitted to read a book after the teacher has read the directions to the class and students have begun the testing process. If you have any questions or concerns regarding PARCC testing, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
