Message from March 22, 2019

The music room was a professional recording studio this week!  Our young musicians enjoyed recording music videos all week during steel band class after school with Senor Bruno. Students in all grades had the opportunity to learn about recording technology, science of sound, and music production during class.

Last weekend members of the Hatch staff joined me in representing D97 at the ASCD Empower 19 conference. The ASCD conference is one of the largest professional conferences in the nation. We presented on our efforts and successes in developing the practice of differentiated instruction. I am so proud of the amazing experiences our teachers create for students each day!

Please see the update to the D97 website clarifying the changes to the last day of school.

Over the last three weeks all the students and teachers here at Hatch have been reading and voting for their favorite picture books in Hatch's first ever March Book Madness. We started with 16 books that all focused on the character's journey. This week the final four included “Not Quite Narwhal” vs “A Big Mooncake for Little Star.” “Not Quite Narwhal” made it to the championship to go against “Finding Winnie,” which barely won over “Gaston!”  The 2019 March Book Madness Champion is Finding Winnie! Be sure to ask your children which book they were cheering for to be crowned champion!

Last Friday, March 15th, we had 29 fifth graders compete in the Hatch Reading Olympics! Over the past three months, students in teams of three, read nine books and then at the competition answered questions about the books. Our winning team competed on Tuesday,  March 19th, against 10 other schools in Oak Park and River Forest. Go fifth grade!

PTO Reminders

  • Longfellow Elementary Diversity Committee Presents: “Dismantling Islamophobia in our Schools”. Join us for a lecture and discussion on how to identify and combat sources of Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism in our own kids’ schools and throughout the Oak Park community. The event takes place on April 10th from 7-9 pm at Irving Elementary, 1125 S. Cuyler.
  • OPEN HATCH PTO BOARD POSITIONS for 2019-2020 School Year (All board positions are two year terms). Want to get more involved in the PTO?  We’re looking to fill several Board positions for next year, such as Co-Treasurer and VP of Communications. To see a brief description of each position or to sign up to run for a position, please add your name to the sign-up link here. Nominations will be taken until the April 16th PTO meeting, and voted on at the May 14th PTO meeting.  If you want to learn more, please contact current co-presidents Cheri Baker at [email protected] or Chris Liskiewitz at [email protected].
  • Mann Power Summer Session!  After conversations with other PTO presidents, we, the Mann PTO presidents Dot Roche and Aimée Eubanks Davis, decided with our community to open this program to students in other D97 schools.  This summer program will offer advanced math and reading for students whose MAP test scores typically are between the 80th – 95th percentiles, and who with additional, small group instruction, may accelerate their command of challenging math and/or reading concepts. We are mirroring this after Julian's summer bump up in math.
    • Students who register must be driven personally and excited about this opportunity to grow and realize their full potential within.  Homework is expected and at the end there will be an assessment to see how much of the content has been mastered. The advanced math and reading courses will run for three weeks from June 10 to June 24, Monday through Friday at Mann School. The cost will be $360.00 per course for all three weeks. Students who are doing both the morning and afternoon courses may stay for a supervised lunch, at no extra charge.
      • Math: 9:00 – 11:30 AM (Pick up at 11:30 AM, if student is not attending the afternoon reading course.)
      • Lunch and Recess Break: 11:30 AM – 12:25 PM (Please bring a peanut-free lunch and water bottle.)
      • Reading: 12:30 – 3:00 PM (Drop off at 12:25 PM, if student is not attending the morning course.)
    • To enroll, create an account and sign up here via Class Track.  When you see Instructor click on your D97 school (e.g., Irving, Lincoln, etc.).  If you need support, email Mann Power ([email protected]). We look forward to our children learning alongside and forming friendships with other students in D97!
  • The 3rd Annual Hatch Tiger Bowling Tournament!
    • Back by popular demand - The Hatch “Parents’ Night Out” bowling tournament is an exciting opportunity for parents and Hatch Staff to come together to have fun, compete, and socialize, as we raise money for our school. Join us Saturday April 6th! Sign up form available here.
  • Hatch Orchard
    • It's time to prune the Hatch Orchard! If you've done it before, or are interested in learning how, mark your calendar to join us on Sunday, April 7, 12:30-2:30pm, in the orchard, and adopt a few trees to look after. In the past 2 years our pruning has brought us a bounty! Bring tools if you have them. Questions, email [email protected].
  • The PTO needs volunteers for the 2019-20 school year. Please consider volunteering to Chair one of the open positions.  Our students count on parent volunteers to keep all of the wonderful PTO sponsored events up and running.  All money raised by the PTO goes right back to our students in the form of discounted field trips, special assemblies, additional programming, various remodeling projects, and many other funding requests. Email Beth Sauers at [email protected] if your are interested or have questions. Thanks!
    • Student Green Team: Looking for a volunteer to run this fun student club.  Meetings run monthly on Fridays during lunch (day can be flexible to fit the volunteer's schedule).  This is a well established club with many activities already in place that can be easily passed on to the new parent volunteer.  If you are passionate about environmental issues then this is the position for you!
    • Tiger Cash (Gift Card Program): Looking for a parent to run the monthly gift card program.  Duties include: collecting, submitting, and distributing all orders each month, and advertising about order date for the month. All the ordering can be done at home on the computer.  The volunteer would only need to be available, for a short time before or after school, the week of ordering to collect and distribute orders.
    • Movie Matinee: Need a volunteer to run the popular after school event.  Duties include: selecting a movie, advertising for the moving with an online sign up for students, organizing volunteers, providing concessions for purchase, checking students into event, and dismissing students when the movie is over.  Movie Matinee takes place once a month on a Friday.
    • Fun Fair: Did your family enjoy the Fun Fair? If so, please consider joining this well established committee.
    • Benefit Days ***New Position**: The PTO is looking to add a new fundraising event next school year. Looking for a parent volunteer to organize three or more benefit days at local restaurants throughout the school year.  This volunteer would contact local restaurants and set up a day for Hatch to receive cash back for every family that dines at the restaurant.  Duties include: coordinating dates with Hatch and restaurants, advertising for the benefit day, and collecting money from the restaurant.
  • March is National Nutrition Month! To celebrate, Hatch's Wellness Committee sponsored a "Rethink Your Drink" hands-on activity for four- 4th and 5th grade classrooms during their physical education class. The activity, led by two Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and two dietetic interns, focused on teaching kids how to determine the sugar content of popular beverages by reading nutrition facts food labels. The students measured out the sugar content of popular beverages and compared the content across 6 different beverages. Did you know that the American Heart Association recommends that we consume less than 6 teaspoons of added sugars everyday? One teaspoon of sugar contains 4 grams of sugar! You can read the nutrition facts food label to calculate the number of teaspoons of sugar you are consuming. For instance, if one serving of juice contains 21 grams of sugar, this equates to ~5 teaspoons of sugar. Compare that to a 12 ounce can of regular soda, which contains 43 grams or ~11 teaspoons of sugar! Use the <6 teaspoons of added sugars/ day rule to guide your food and beverage consumption and choose low sugar, nutrient-dense options. For more tips on healthy eating, visit the Dietary Guidelines 2015-2010 for Americans.
  • Hatch DivCo Meeting – Tuesday, April 23rd, 7pm- Hatch Cafeteria.  Parents, please join us for our committee meeting to discuss and explore our newly created focus groups. Questions please contact via [email protected]
  • Oak Park Voter's Guide
    • Please find the Oak Park Voter’s Guide that was created by Paul Goyette with Oak Park Call to Action and several members of our Community. This guide was created in an effort to provide more transparency in government and as a way to help voters that might be less informed about the candidates running in this cycle. Included you will find responses to questions from Village Trustee, Library, Park District, and School District 97 and 200 Candidates. The site will continue to be updated with relevant articles, video clips and other helpful tools that will help you and your neighbors make an informed decision in April. https://www.activisttoolkit.org/2019-oak-park-voter-guide
