Message from April 5, 2019

It was wonderful to see all of those smiling faces as students returned from spring break on Monday. Many students commented on how nice their school looked upon their return. Thank you to our amazing custodial team that worked tirelessly over break to rejuvenate the building for the last stretch of school!

Family Math Night and our annual Science Fair are coming soon! Thursday April 18th  from 6-7:30pm in the cafeteria and gym. It’s a two for one deal-Math and Science in one fun-filled evening. Donations of non-perishable canned goods, high protein foods, and personal items can be brought to the school. Cash donations or checks made out to the OPRF Food Pantry can also be contributed. We hope you can make it to our annual Staff/Parent basketball fundraiser next Saturday, April 13th, at Brooks Middle School at 2:30 p.m.

Each year we strive to improve the school experience we provide to our students. In order to do so, we need your input. I’d like to invite parents to a “Coffee with the Principal” on Friday, April 12th at 8am in the conference room. This is an informal gathering. Please feel free to stay 5 minutes or 45 minutes as your schedule permits and be sure to sign in at the main office. See you then!

All the students that had a birthday in March had the opportunity to come to the library on the birthday and check out a brand new hardcover book! After they are done reading the book, it gets returned to the library so other students can enjoy the book but a special sticker is placed inside the book to honor their birthday. Take a look here to see all the March Birthday kids. If you haven't done so already, please consider making a donation to keep the program going! Thank you!

On Monday, May 6th, the award winning author Lori Degman will be coming to talk to the K-2 students. Next week in library, students will receive an order form to order copies of Lori's books. A copy of the order form is available here as s well! Any books that are ordered, Lori will autograph them so be sure to get your orders turned-in to the Hatch library by Friday, April 19th. Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this great opportunity for our students!

PTO Reminders

  • Longfellow Elementary Diversity Committee Presents: “Dismantling Islamophobia in our Schools”. Join us for a lecture and discussion on how to identify and combat sources of Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism in our own kids’ schools and throughout the Oak Park community. The event takes place on April 10th from 7-9 pm at Irving Elementary, 1125 S. Cuyler.
  • OPEN HATCH PTO BOARD POSITIONS for 2019-2020 School Year (All board positions are two year terms). Want to get more involved in the PTO?  We’re looking to fill several Board positions for next year, such as Co-Treasurer and VP of Communications. To see a brief description of each position or to sign up to run for a position, please add your name to the sign-up link here. Nominations will be taken until the April 16th PTO meeting, and voted on at the May 14th PTO meeting.  If you want to learn more, please contact current co-presidents Cheri Baker at [email protected] or Chris Liskiewitz at [email protected].
  • Mann Power Summer Session!  After conversations with other PTO presidents, we, the Mann PTO presidents Dot Roche and Aimée Eubanks Davis, decided with our community to open this program to students in other D97 schools.  This summer program will offer advanced math and reading for students whose MAP test scores typically are between the 80th – 95th percentiles, and who with additional, small group instruction, may accelerate their command of challenging math and/or reading concepts. We are mirroring this after Julian's summer bump up in math.
    • Students who register must be driven personally and excited about this opportunity to grow and realize their full potential within.  Homework is expected and at the end there will be an assessment to see how much of the content has been mastered. The advanced math and reading courses will run for three weeks from June 10 to June 24, Monday through Friday at Mann School. The cost will be $360.00 per course for all three weeks. Students who are doing both the morning and afternoon courses may stay for a supervised lunch, at no extra charge.
      • Math: 9:00 – 11:30 AM (Pick up at 11:30 AM, if student is not attending the afternoon reading course.)
      • Lunch and Recess Break: 11:30 AM – 12:25 PM (Please bring a peanut-free lunch and water bottle.)
      • Reading: 12:30 – 3:00 PM (Drop off at 12:25 PM, if student is not attending the morning course.)
    • To enroll, create an account and sign up here via Class Track.  When you see Instructor click on your D97 school (e.g., Irving, Lincoln, etc.).  If you need support, email Mann Power ([email protected]). We look forward to our children learning alongside and forming friendships with other students in D97!
  • Hatch Orchard
    • It's time to prune the Hatch Orchard! If you've done it before, or are interested in learning how, mark your calendar to join us on Sunday, April 7, 12:30-2:30pm, in the orchard, and adopt a few trees to look after. In the past 2 years our pruning has brought us a bounty! Bring tools if you have them. Questions, email [email protected].
  • The PTO needs volunteers for the 2019-20 school year. Please consider volunteering to Chair one of the open positions.  Our students count on parent volunteers to keep all of the wonderful PTO sponsored events up and running.  All money raised by the PTO goes right back to our students in the form of discounted field trips, special assemblies, additional programming, various remodeling projects, and many other funding requests. Email Beth Sauers at [email protected] if your are interested or have questions. Thanks!
    • Student Green Team: Looking for a volunteer to run this fun student club.  Meetings run monthly on Fridays during lunch (day can be flexible to fit the volunteer's schedule).  This is a well established club with many activities already in place that can be easily passed on to the new parent volunteer.  If you are passionate about environmental issues then this is the position for you!
    • Tiger Cash (Gift Card Program): Looking for a parent to run the monthly gift card program.  Duties include: collecting, submitting, and distributing all orders each month, and advertising about order date for the month. All the ordering can be done at home on the computer.  The volunteer would only need to be available, for a short time before or after school, the week of ordering to collect and distribute orders.
    • Movie Matinee: Need a volunteer to run the popular after school event.  Duties include: selecting a movie, advertising for the moving with an online sign up for students, organizing volunteers, providing concessions for purchase, checking students into event, and dismissing students when the movie is over.  Movie Matinee takes place once a month on a Friday.
    • Fun Fair: Did your family enjoy the Fun Fair? If so, please consider joining this well established committee.
    • Benefit Days ***New Position**: The PTO is looking to add a new fundraising event next school year. Looking for a parent volunteer to organize three or more benefit days at local restaurants throughout the school year.  This volunteer would contact local restaurants and set up a day for Hatch to receive cash back for every family that dines at the restaurant.  Duties include: coordinating dates with Hatch and restaurants, advertising for the benefit day, and collecting money from the restaurant.
  • Hatch DivCo Meeting – Tuesday, April 23rd, 7pm- Hatch Cafeteria.  Parents, please join us for our committee meeting to discuss and explore our newly created focus groups. Questions please contact via [email protected]
  • As always, check out the Hatch PTO website for the most up to date information at http://www.hatchpto.org/.
