Message from April 18, 2019

Thank you also to everyone who participated in our Family Math Night and Science Fair, and a special thanks to our teachers for the enormous amount of time and energy that went into these events. It was wonderful to see our future inventors and mathematicians showcasing their skills! Our annual parent/teacher basketball game was also a huge success. Thank you to Mr. Cruz, Mr. Jacobson and all the volunteers who made it possible!

Reminder: No School tomorrow Friday, April 19th

Students should have come home with an order form and free sticker page of one piece of their artwork for our annual Kids Kreations art fundraiser earlier this week. If you'd like to purchase any of the items with your child's artwork on it, please submit the order form or order online by next Monday, April 22nd. Thanks!! Please contact Sharon Morgan [email protected] with any questions.

We are seeing continued success with our new system for the delivery of forgotten items, which was rolled out in October!  There is a huge improvement of students remembering to bring things needed for school. Thank you to all families for helping our students with the Hatch Habit, “Be Responsible.”  Below are the procedures for dropping off items for anyone who might need them:

The drop off location is in the main entrance vestibule where you can drop off the item for delivery.  If you do need to drop off an item that your child cannot do without, please make sure any items you bring are labeled with your child’s name and teacher’s name with the label securely attached to the item and delivered no later than 10am.  Place the item in the appropriate bin so that we can ensure your child receives their item. At 10am each day, all items will be distributed directly to the classrooms. No items will be accepted after 10 am.

Starting this week in library, all the 3rd graders are participating in the Geared Up LEGO engineering program to help the children learn about simple machines in a hands-on way. This program is provided free to our class by the nonprofit Oak Park Education Foundation (opef.org). If you would like to volunteer to help, we are always happy to welcome anyone from LEGO newbies to engineering professionals join us. Please contact Mrs. Howe, [email protected], if you are interested.

Working in teams of two, students are engineering the simple machines with LEGO motorized mechanisms, and testing what happens when they change variables. For example, one project has students experiment to determine which cart will roll further down a hill, a heavier or lighter one. They also test bigger or smaller wheels to see how they affect the speed of the cart. Students make predictions, build carts and a ramp, measure weights and distances. They learn first-hand about friction, mass, moving energy and efficiency. And the collaborative projects also promote hands-on problem solving and teamwork skills. On Monday, May 6th, the award winning author Lori Degman will be coming to talk to the K-2 students. Last week in library, students received an order form to order copies of Lori's books. A copy of the order form is available here as well.  Lori will autograph any books that are ordered. Although the order forms were due today, April 18th, we have ordered a few extra copies of each book. These extra copies are available on a first-come first-served basis so please be sure to turn in your order form as soon as possible!  Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this great opportunity for our students!

PTO Reminders
  • Mann Power Summer Session!  After conversations with other PTO presidents, we, the Mann PTO presidents Dot Roche and Aimée Eubanks Davis, decided with our community to open this program to students in other D97 schools.  This summer program will offer advanced math and reading for students whose MAP test scores typically are between the 80th – 95th percentiles, and who with additional, small group instruction, may accelerate their command of challenging math and/or reading concepts. We are mirroring this after Julian's summer bump up in math.
    • Students who register must be driven personally and excited about this opportunity to grow and realize their full potential within.  Homework is expected and at the end there will be an assessment to see how much of the content has been mastered. The advanced math and reading courses will run for three weeks from June 10 to June 24, Monday through Friday at Mann School. The cost will be $360.00 per course for all three weeks. Students who are doing both the morning and afternoon courses may stay for a supervised lunch, at no extra charge.
      • Math: 9:00 – 11:30 AM (Pick up at 11:30 AM, if student is not attending the afternoon reading course.)
      • Lunch and Recess Break: 11:30 AM – 12:25 PM (Please bring a peanut-free lunch and water bottle.)
      • Reading: 12:30 – 3:00 PM (Drop off at 12:25 PM, if student is not attending the morning course.)
    • To enroll, create an account and sign up here via Class Track.  When you see Instructor click on your D97 school (e.g., Irving, Lincoln, etc.).  If you need support, email Mann Power ([email protected]). We look forward to our children learning alongside and forming friendships with other students in D97!
  • The PTO needs volunteers for the 2019-20 school year. Please consider volunteering to Chair one of the open positions.  Our students count on parent volunteers to keep all of the wonderful PTO sponsored events up and running.  All money raised by the PTO goes right back to our students in the form of discounted field trips, special assemblies, additional programming, various remodeling projects, and many other funding requests. Email Beth Sauers at [email protected] if your are interested or have questions. Thanks!
    • Student Green Team: Looking for a volunteer to run this fun student club.  Meetings run monthly on Fridays during lunch (day can be flexible to fit the volunteer's schedule).  This is a well established club with many activities already in place that can be easily passed on to the new parent volunteer.  If you are passionate about environmental issues then this is the position for you!
    • Tiger Cash (Gift Card Program): Looking for a parent to run the monthly gift card program.  Duties include: collecting, submitting, and distributing all orders each month, and advertising about order date for the month. All the ordering can be done at home on the computer.  The volunteer would only need to be available, for a short time before or after school, the week of ordering to collect and distribute orders.
    • Movie Matinee: Need a volunteer to run the popular after school event.  Duties include: selecting a movie, advertising for the moving with an online sign up for students, organizing volunteers, providing concessions for purchase, checking students into event, and dismissing students when the movie is over.  Movie Matinee takes place once a month on a Friday.
    • Fun Fair: Did your family enjoy the Fun Fair? If so, please consider joining this well established committee.
    • Benefit Days ***New Position**: The PTO is looking to add a new fundraising event next school year. Looking for a parent volunteer to organize three or more benefit days at local restaurants throughout the school year.  This volunteer would contact local restaurants and set up a day for Hatch to receive cash back for every family that dines at the restaurant.  Duties include: coordinating dates with Hatch and restaurants, advertising for the benefit day, and collecting money from the restaurant.
  • As always, check out the Hatch PTO website for the most up to date information at http://www.hatchpto.org/.
