Message from October 4, 2019

We have enjoyed some beautiful weather this past week mixed with a bit of rain. In the event of rain or inclement weather, we ask that you to bring students to the playground doors no earlier than 7:50. We will have staff available to help them to their designated area. Kindergarten and first graders will report to the lunchroom. All other grades will report to their seats in the auditorium until teachers pick them up at 7:57am.

Thank you to the Green Team for helping out with International Walk to School Day on Wednesday and to all the families that braved the weather to participate! The Childrens' Clinic Dental clinic at Hatch was a huge success!! Thank you to the 60 families who participated in this free service. It will be back again next year!

Hopefully you’ve been reading a bit about Second Step on our website. If you’d like to hear more about the Social Emotional Learning curriculum at Hatch and our Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS), we will be hosting an info session during our next PTO meeting on Tuesday, October 15th from 8-8:30am in the lunchroom. We hope to see you there!

Fourth and fifth grade parents, please be on the lookout for your child’s IAR scores, which were sent home today. The Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) test is the state-mandated test our 3rd-5th graders participated in last spring.

In order to create a safe, predictable, consistent, and positive culture during the lunch hour, the PBIS team is organizing a variety of lunch clubs.  We are currently looking for parent volunteers who are available to run a weekly lunch club.  Some ideas for lunch clubs include lego club, science, crafts, walking, spoken word, or running club.  If you are interested in supervising a club, please contact Ms. Winfield at [email protected] to get started.

The Fall Celebration is at the end of this month. We encourage food free celebrations. However, if room parents plan to serve food as part of the classroom celebration, the food plan must be submitted to Nurse Rossi via e-mail no later than October 17th.  If you have not submitted a plan by October 17th, then it is assumed that no food will be served at the celebration. The food chosen should be from the approved food list.  Please let Nurse Rossi know as soon as possible what you plan to serve. Thank you so much for your patience and cooperation to ensure that we have a safe celebration for all of our children!

If you missed the Yearbook 15% discount, you can purchase the 2019-2020 Yearbook by October 31 and receive a 10% discount! See flyer for more information and go directly to Treering.com to purchase a Yearbook.

Just a reminder, if students are going to be late, please call the attendance line at 708-665-3063 or send an email to [email protected].

In the next few weeks we will have new boilers installed in the building which will require that we close the small parking lot off the main entrance. Thank you for your patience as we complete that work. That parking lot will be unavailable for the duration of the project, estimated to be 3 months.

Teal Pumpkin Project: for people with food allergies.  Put a teal pumpkin on your doorstep to let those with food allergy know that you have a non-food option for trick or treating. It is a great way to support those with food allergies. For more information:

Starting this Sunday, the Hatch Library will be emailing overdue notices to parents if their student has a library book that is overdue. Please return the library books as soon as possible or email Mrs. Howe that your child is still reading the book and needs longer to read the book and she can renew the book up to 3 times. Thank you for your help in getting the library books returned to Hatch so other students can enjoy reading them!

On Thursday, October 10th, Hatch Elementary students, along with students from across the state of Illinois, will participate in the Great Apple Crunch to celebrate National Farm to School Month by crunching into locally grown apples. All students from Hatch Elementary will have an opportunity to taste a locally-grown apple either through the school-provided lunch or by visiting the Wellness Committee's table during the lunch hour. A nutritionist will be available to discuss the nutritional benefits of apples and locally grown foods with the students. The apples provided to Hatch students are grown at Rendleman Orchards in Alto Pass, Illinois. For more information on the Illinois Great Apple Crunch, visit Illinois Great Apple Crunch
