Please be sure to complete this year’s Illinois 5Essentials Survey! This is a unique opportunity to not only provide feedback to the school and district, but to support Hatch on a larger scale. School-level reports will be generated if at least 20 percent of parents respond to the survey. We are currently at 9%. It should only take approximately 10 minutes to complete. If parents have more than one child that attends the same school, they may elect to participate multiple times. For parents with children enrolled in multiple schools, we recommend that they participate in the survey for each school. Thank you for your support!

Holiday parties will be held in classrooms the afternoon of Friday, December 20th. If you have questions about the holiday party, please contact the head room parent for your child’s classroom. We will also honor the holiday season together with our annual holiday sing. This is an opportunity for students to connect with one another as a Hatch family before the break, and there will be limited seating for parents at the sing. If you plan to attend, please sign in at the office and we will seat you once the children have all taken their places.

Also, as we approach the last week before the holidays, I want to thank all of our room parents, as well as Nurse Rossi, for their flexibility and thoughtfulness regarding food at celebrations. With an ever increasing number of allergies, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, keeping our children safe is always our main concern. We appreciate your partnership in being as preventative as possible!

As we prepare for the holiday break, please remember to check the lost and found for any missing items. Labeling your child’s clothes and outerwear is a great way to avoid having to search!

Thank you to those of you who are already signing in at the main office when entering the building. We love having such a strong parent presence in our school! As we work together to ensure everyone’s safety, please try to remember that all visitors must enter through the main office and get a visitor’s badge.  Beginning in January, we will be piloting a new system called LobbyGuard, similar to what the high school uses to check in visitors. The letter describing the change is posted on the district website, and includes a link to the FAQs. This small step in our procedures is important in emergency situations to make sure every person in the building is accounted for. We appreciate your cooperation as we work together to keep our children safe!

This time of year, we sometimes see an increase in theft. This week a person tried to gain access to cars in the Hatch parking lot. As always, please be vigilant and preventative whenever possible. The next OPPD zone meeting will be Tuesday, December 17, 2019 @ 7pm at DOLE LIBRARY (255 Augusta) in the meeting room. Come out and receive pertinent information on recent crime stats, significant incidents and crime prevention. Thank you!

With your student's report card last week, you found the One Book One School order form. An extra copy of the form is available here. All forms are due by December 18th. The Family Literacy Night at the Hatch Coffee House to kick off One Book One School is Tuesday, February 11th, 2020 from 6 - 7 P.M.

This week all students celebrated Hour of Code in Library class. Hour of Code is the chance for the students to explore the world of computer science.

  • Kindergartens programmed a robot mouse
  • 1st graders sent a fuzzy ball, Kodeable, on a coding adventure and used OSMOS!
  • 2nd graders learned how to use Scratch Jr.
  • 3rd graders used Ozobots which follow the line the students drew
  • 4th grades coded Dot and Dash to dance around the library.
  • 3rd and 4th graders also explored the Hour of Code Website. Students were asking how to work on it more at home so here is the link to all the coding activities they did in library!

5th Graders are currently Building Lego Mindstorm Robots thanks to the Oak Park Education Foundation. During library, the 5th graders are learning how to build Lego Robots and code these robots through a series of challenges over the next 4 weeks!

On Monday, December 9th three of our 5th graders (self named “Da Bosses”) represented Hatch at the Reading Olympics Competition at the Oak Park Public Library. Thirteen teams from Oak Park and River Forest competed by answering questions on nine books that the teams read together. It was a close competition as it was a three way tie for 2nd place... but HATCH WON first place! Their name will soon be posted on the plaque at the Oak Park Public Library. Congrats!

In District 97, we aim to provide a learning environment that is equitable and inclusive of ALL children. To do so, we need your continued partnership by supporting schools and students, monitoring your own child’s progress and giving us feedback along the way. Before you and your child(ren) begin the season of rest, rejuvenation and precious time with friends and family, please take a moment to complete THIS SURVEY. Your responses will assist us in further improvements as we prepare for the remainder of the school year. The survey will close on Dec. 27, 2019, at 5 p.m. Thank you in advance for your response, and for your continued support of our schools and the students we serve.
