Message from February 28, 2020

This week students enjoyed a stellar performance of the opera "The Pirates of Penzance."  Thank you to Mr. Jacobson and the PTO for making “Opera for the Young” possible.  If you ask your child, they should be able to tell you all about the story and sing you some of the songs as well!

We need your help during the lunch hour!  Alternative clubs and activities offer our students some quieter options for fun during the lunch recess. Are you willing to volunteer your time to hang out with our FABULOUS students from 10:55-11:50?  Do you like to draw, knit, build with Legos, or do you have another idea for something you would like to teach our Hatch Tigers? You can volunteer just 1 day a week or everyday!  Please contact Ms. Winfield if you are interested.  [email protected]

We are in the process of setting up our permanent sensory hallway. If you are willing to help, we please sign up here or contact Ms. Winfield. Thank you!

Beginning  Wednesday, March 11th, our third, fourth and fifth grade students will take part in the Illinois Academic Readiness  testing (formerly known as PARCC). Fifth graders will also participate in the Illinois Science Assessment. We are excited that testing will be web-based again this year, which will give students the opportunity to build experience with testing on a computer in a comfortable environment. Students should make every effort to be present and on time to school during the testing window. Should an illness or unforeseen absence occur, the student will participate in make-up testing. Parents, please assist your child in being prepared for testing. Eating breakfast and being well-rested will help your student to do his or her best. Discussing the importance of the test while minimizing any anxieties your child may be feeling is helpful as well. As is required by law, every student who is eligible to take the IAR assessment will receive a test ticket or test booklet. However, in accordance with our practice, anyone who elects not to take the assessment will be permitted to read a book after the teacher has read the directions to the class and students have begun the testing process. If you have any questions or concerns regarding IAR testing, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Kindergarten and new student registration for 2020-21 has begun.  For dates and more information, please see the attached flyer.

District 97 is currently monitoring the news regarding coronavirus (COVID-19). We have been following recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), which has been receiving guidance from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Please be assured that we are following all recommended protocols of the IDPH, which includes routine deep cleaning and disinfecting in all of our buildings. We are also asking staff to review hand-washing techniques with students. We will continue to monitor updates about the coronavirus from local, state and federal agencies, and will keep families informed should recommendations change.

The IDPH recommends everyday actions to help prevent the spread of viruses, including:

·  Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

·  Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

·  Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

·  Stay home when you are sick.

·  Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

·  Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Harambee Tonight

Celebrate Black History Month- Attend Harambee on February 28.
Harambee is a lively performance that celebrates African dance, drumming, and spoken word.  Kuumba Kids have been hard at work for months to put on a great performance. And the costumes are stunning!  Note: our Hatch After Hours also offers Kuumba Kids dance.

Come experience this at Longfellow School Auditorium on February 28th from 7-8pm, with an African Market open from 6-9pm. For further information contact [email protected].

National Nutrition Month at Hatch

March is National Nutrition Month, and 3rd, 4th and 5th graders will be celebrating with Hatch's Wellness Committee!  Two registered dietitians and dietetic interns will be meeting with 3rd, 4th and 5th graders during their physical education class to engage in hands on learning on healthy eating, reading nutrition facts labels and how to limit their sugar intake on a daily basis. Students will be reviewing nutrition facts labels to compare added sugars in different foods and beverages. Did you know that the American Heart Association recommends children consume <24 grams of added sugars per day ( <6 teaspoons)? When reading food labels and ingredients, it's important to know that "sugar" has many names. Review the attached handout for alternate names for sugar that are included in foods and beverages. In addition to the nutrition education component, Mr. Cruz has designed a physical education activity that incorporates nutrition facts labels and teaches students how different foods fuel the body.
