Message from June 5, 2020

It is hard to believe we wrapped up this unique year at Hatch School!  I am so proud of the accomplishments and resilience of our students and staff this year.  Best of luck to our 5th graders as they begin their middle school experience.  Please see this send off video from their promotion ceremony!  We know they will make us proud and represent themselves well.  Thank you to the many parents who have volunteered in different capacities this year and who joined us in supporting the learning at home!  We are so grateful for all you do to support teaching and learning at Hatch!  A special thanks to our 2020 retirees for their many years of service to the children and families of Hatch:  Ms. Bodzewski, Ms. Ficca, Ms. Stack, and Ms. Kruse!

Please be on the lookout as we will email report cards home next week!

Next week we will also be able to schedule the pick up of student items for classrooms on the first floor.  We are currently NOT able to access classrooms on the second and third floors due to the construction happening in the building.  As soon as we get clearance from the construction company, we will gather student items and send out a scheduled time for pick up.  However, this may not take place for a few weeks, as we must adhere to safety regulations in accessing the building.  Families of students on the first floor will receive an email with the time and date for picking up items and drop off borrowed books/classroom items along with specific directions for how to do so within the social distancing guidelines set in place.  If you ordered a yearbook, we will have included that in the bag of student items.  Thank you for your patience as we navigate this situation!

The Oak Park Public Library Summer Reading Program kicked off on Monday, June 1st!  You can still sign-up!  The entire program will be run online this year and kids will be able to earn beads and win raffle prizes!  For more information, go here.  And don't forget OPPL also offers an adult summer reading program, too!

Looking for books to read this summer?  Mrs. Howe, Mrs. Sordilla and other D97 librarians are reading the first chapter of many chapters books aloud, so if you enjoy chapter 1, then you can pick up the book to read the rest!  Check all summer long for more books to be added to this padlet!  Also, be sure to check out the Hatch Library Website for more book recommendations!

On Friday, June 5th, you received an email from the Hatch Library letting you know all the books your student currently has checked out from the Hatch Library.  You are more than welcome to return any of the library books you are done reading when you come to pick up your student's supplies from Hatch or you are welcome to read the books over the summer and return them in the fall!  Happy Reading!

District 97 Summer Learning Plan

District 97 is providing a variety of enrichment opportunities to support student learning over the summer.  More than 50 staff members collaborated to create our optional Summer Learning Plan for Grades 1-8, which includes suggested activities and online resources in the areas of reading, writing and math.  The document also includes a comprehensive list of virtual field trips for families to enjoy.  This list will be posted on our district and school websites, and we will continue to provide resources for families throughout the summer.  To access the optional Summer Learning Plan, please visit https://bit.ly/2X68WIN.

Hatch teachers also put together some additional suggestions for summer learning based on our students’ experiences this year.  Enjoy!

Here is the latest round of Hatch Steel Band videos as you head of into summer break!

District 97 will continue to hold meal distributions through June 22.  Pick-ups will be held every Monday, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Longfellow Elementary School (for Julian and feeder schools), 715 S. Highland Ave., and Brooks Middle School (for Brooks and feeder schools), 325 S. Kenilworth Ave.  Meals are available to any District 97 family in need.  On June 8 and 15, each student will receive breakfast and lunch items for five days.  On June 22, each student will receive breakfast and lunch items for seven days.  We have not yet determined if we will be serving meals in July/August. We will keep families informed of any future distributions via email/text notifications.  If you have any questions, please contact our food service coordinator, Carla Ellis, at [email protected].

Have a safe and happy  summer from everyone here at Hatch!

Sincerely,
