Thank you to everyone who attended our first PTO meeting of the year on Tuesday evening. It was wonderful to see so many families getting involved and supporting our school!

Just a reminder that we do not have indoor space to allow students to safely enter the building prior to their entrance time in the event of rain or inclement weather. Please have your child arrive at their line as close to their time as possible just as we did last year. Please do NOT park in the drop off lane. Pull all the way up to let your child out. Thank you!

Please write your child’s name on any item that might find its way to the Lost and Found. Labeled items will be returned to students ASAP. We also encourage you to have your child check that their bag is prepared the night before as we work on our “Be Responsible” Hatch habit. Due to the current no visitor policy, we are not able to accept items for drop off during the day. Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we continually strive to keep our students safe.

Our next virtual “Coffee with the Principal” will be Friday, Oct. 1st from 8:15-9:00am and will include Nurse Rossi as our special guest! This is an informal gathering.  Please feel free to stay 5 minutes or 45 minutes as your schedule permits. See you then!

Second Step: We’re well into teaching our social emotional learning curriculum, Second Step!  Our Kindergarten and 1st grade students are continuing to focus on important foundational skills to help them learn.  This past week they learned to apply their self talk to stay focused despite distractions.  Ask your student to show you their attentoscopes, another cool strategy they learned to help keep their attention on what’s important!   Our 2nd graders learned the importance of using an assertive voice instead of a passive or aggressive voice to get their needs met.  They practiced how to express needing help or losing an item.  Our 3rd graders learned how to make a plan when they forget something or need help at school. They practiced making a simple, doable, and organized plan.  Our 4th graders learned about respecting differences and our 5th graders learned about predicting feelings.  Both are important skills for getting along with one another!  Here are our home links for the skills they learned this week so you can make connections at home.  Not every grade level has a home link each week:

Kindergarten: Self Talk for Staying on Task

First Grade: Self Talk for Learning

Fourth Grade: Respecting Similarities and Differences

Fifth Grade: Predicting Feelings

What is mindfulness? How can mindfulness practices be helpful in supporting youths' academic and emotional functioning at school and at home? DePaul University is offering FREE  talk next Thursday, September 30th. Here is a link to sign up!

Birthday Book Program Update: Hatch has a wonderful birthday book program for students who are celebrating their birthdays! In the past, students have been able to choose a new book from a special book cart (with only brand new, unread books), making them the first student to ever check out their book. In their brand new book, students received a personalized, celebratory sticker on the inside flap of the book. Though it is extra special for students to check out brand new books, it is unfortunate to have a whole shelf of brand new books in the back corner of the library, waiting for birthdays and unable to be circulated and enjoyed in the library. So many students have been logging in to the library catalog and requesting these new books that are on the birthday book shelf! In an effort to ensure these new books get read and enjoyed by more students as soon as possible, the birthday book program will be adjusted accordingly: now, on a student's birthday (or half birthday!) all students will be able to check out any book in the Hatch Library as their birthday book. As long as it doesn't already have a birthday sticker in it, the student will be able to put their own birthday sticker in it to memorialize their birthday forever! Thank you for your flexibility and understanding in the program's adjustment and for helping me put as many books as possible in Hatch Tiger hands. Happy Reading! Email Nefret Stringham at [email protected] with any questions.
