Longfellow Weekly News: Week of Sept 17, 2018

Dear Longfellow Families,

Regular routines are important to the success of both children and adults.  Now that we are entering the fifth week of school it is important to have established a set routine and predictable bedtime, wake-up time, dress, homework, and lunch preparation process. These predictable routines help ensure that each day starts off on the right foot.  As you likely know we closely track the timeliness and attendance of our students at Longfellow School.  Once students are late or absent more than 9 times within a school year we will begin the process of documenting our contact with families to remedy the problem.  Thank you for making school a priority and for all the time and effort it takes to get up and out the door on time to school.

Maggie Cahill

Asst. Principal

Morning Open Gym Cancelled through October 1st

Our gym is currently set up for "Heartland Adventure" and is not available for Morning Open Gym.  On Monday, October 1st Morning Open Gym will start back up and students will be welcome to come to school as early at 7:30 am, grab a pass from the office, and play with their friends in the gym.  In the meantime students are welcome to join Sunrise Study Hall at 7:30, Breakfast between 7:15-7:45, or play outside with thier friends starting at 7:45 am.

Second Step This Week  Students in the Classroom

This week our fifth graders are learning about predicting feelings of others.  Our fourth graders are learning about respecting similarities and differences.  Other grade levels will be practicing using self talk for focusing and learning.  These are important life skils that serve students in all aspects of their lives.  Please take a moment to talk about and practice these skills as a farmily by reading your child's "home link" for this week.  The following grade levels have homelinks this week:  KindergartenFirst GradeFourth Grade, and Fifth Grade.

Picture Day This Thursday!

Picture day is Thursday, September 20th.  Families can either order online or send in the order form on picture day. If you do not order before picture day, you will receive an email within 48 hours with your child’s image. The email will contain instructions on how to order online. Class pictures are generally delivered separately from picture packages. The class pictures will ship after make-up picture day to provide the opportunity for each student to be included. You should have received your order form last week. Ordering: Click here for the website and enter code: 28710D

Walk to School Day  Students walking to school

Students from Longfellow School will celebrate International Walk to School Day on October 3.  Oak Park will join children and adults from all over the globe celebrating the fun and healthy tradition of walking to school. Some ways to participate:

Help your children enjoy Walk to School Day even more by walking with them yourself!

Organize a “walking school bus” by picking up children, who know you, on the way to school.

Make special arrangements to join the walking school bus, even if your child normally rides the bus.

By encouraging the walk to school on October 3rd and every day, we support an easy, healthy and fun way for children to travel to school.

Financial Support

Please consider completing the Free/Reduced form, even if you think there is a remote chance it will be approved.  This form assists families with cost of lunch, milk, school fees, field trips, fee-based PTO programs, and any other money items that may come up over the course of the school year.  This is a confidential process that can be started by filling out this form and returning it to the scho l office.  Completing this form is mutually beneficial as additional school funds may be available depending on the number of students who qualify.  Please contact Ms. Dolezal if you have further questions or concerns.

Cheers for Peers

We would like to recognize children and adults who make a difference at Longfellow School!  If you would like to nominate an individual who makes a difference at our school, please fill out this form.  The individual you nominate will receive a printed form with a description of their contribution to making Longfellow a great place to be.
