Book Fair

A magical time is nearly upon us: The Fall Book Fair! This year’s theme is Enchanted Forest and we’re looking forward to making some magic for our students. The Book Fair will be open the week of October 22nd from 8am-7pm Monday-Thursday and 8am-noon on Friday and online sales begin October 15 at http://www.scholastic.com/bf/longfellowelemschool5.  Stop in to pick out some new books or sign up to help out: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0C44A9AA22A1F49-volunteer. If you would be interested in joining the Book Fair Committee, let us know or feel free to ask any questions at [email protected].

Halloween and Fall Harvest Festival at Longfellow

Our annual Halloween Parade will take place on Wednesday, October 31st at 12:45 pm.  All families are invited to watch the parade as students exit the back of the school, walk East on Jackson, South on Highland, West on VanBuren, North around the Cuyler cul-de-sack, continue West on Van Buren, and then finally North on Ridgeland and back to the school.  Please remember to choose costumes for your child that do not include real or look-a-like weapons or blood/gore.  We ask that students not wear face masks or head coverings because we parade around the school for a significant part of the celebration.  It is important that we are able to recognize student faces and keep students safe while outside of the school.  Please also remember to choose costumes that do not stereotype, demean, or make fun of other people.  Students who are not participating in the festivities are welcome to join our Fall Harvest Party.  Please contact your child's teacher for more information about that event.

Second Step This Week

The Second Step curriculum teaches our students important life skills. Please take a moment to talk about and practice these skills as a family by reading your child's "home link" for this week.  The grade levels that have home links this week are: Second Grade- Feeling Confident  Fourth Grade- Joining In  Fifth Grade- Responding with Compassion

Career Day Volunteers Needed

We would like families and members of our community to share their amazing jobs at Longfellow's Annual Career Day on Tuesday,  November 20th from 8:00-10:30am. Volunteers will present for about 15-20 minutes in 3-5 classrooms. If you are interested in participating in this wonderful event, please fill out this form by October 26th. We need at least 30 adults to present their careers as well as other volunteers to help with the event.  We would love for our students to learn about a variety of career options.  You can also share the form with a friend or family member you would like to recommend.

OPEF's Super STEAM Saturday

Please join the Oak Park Education Foundation for a free fun morning of crafting, collaborating, and creating. Drive a robot, write a poem, unleash your inner artist and learn more about OPEF with great activities for kids ages 5-12. Saturday, November 3 from 10-12 at Beye School. You can learn more about the event on OPEF's website or their Facebook page.

Cheers for Peers!

We would like to recognize children and adults who make a difference at Longfellow School.  If you would like to nominate an inpidual who makes a difference at our school, please fill out this form.  The inpidual you nominate will receive a printed form with a description of their contribution to making Longfellow a great place to be.
