Longfellow Weekly News: Week of Oct 22, 2018

Dear Longfellow Families,

This week is conference week. We know this is a busy week and there is so much information exchanged in a short period of time.  A list of questions that our families tend to ask during conferences was created.  Please take a look at the list and consider which two questions are most important for you to explore with your child's teacher.  We appreciate the commitment that each family makes to our Longfellow students and the time you have carved out of our schedule to attend conferences this week.

1. How can I get regular updates or access regular updates about my child’s progress?

2. In what subjects/standards/skills do you feel my child needs additional help and/or attention? Enrichment?

3. Does my child get along with his/her classmates?

4. Is my child meeting behavioral expectations? How will you contact me if my child is not meeting expectations?

5. Can you provide me with information about the assessments my child is taking?

6. What are my child’s current assessment scores?

7. Is my child performing at his/her grade level?

8. Can you tell me what type of attention my child receives if he/she is struggling in a particular subject?

9. Can you provide me with resources I can use to help my child in areas where extra help is needed? Resources for enrichment?

10.How can I share information with you that will give you additional insight about my child?

11. What is the best way to contact you if I have a concern?

Thank you,

Maggie Cahill

Prepare for Construction Artist rendering of new Longfellow

Construction at Longfellow will begin on November 1st.  There will be no changes to where students enter the building at arrival or exit the building at dismissal.  However, there will only be two entrances to the blacktop playground area so please allow for extra time to walk around construction areas. Families will be able to access the back playground from the Cuyler cul-de-sac and from one entrance next to the alley on Jackson Street (just East of Ridgeland Ave). There will no longer be access to the back of the building through the garden area off of Highland Avenue South of the building. You can check updates about the construction project on our  "Longfellow Expansion Page" that will be used to post information about the project.  Please click here to view the page.

Halloween and Fall Harvest Festival at Longfellow

Our annual Halloween Parade will take place on Wednesday, October 31st at 12:45 pm.  All families are invited to watch the parade as students exit the back of the school, walk East on Jackson, South on Highland, West on VanBuren, North around the Cuyler cul-de-sack, continue West on Van Buren, and then finally North on Ridgeland and back to the school.  Please remember to choose costumes for your child that do not include real or look-a-like weapons or blood/gore.  We ask that students not wear face masks or head coverings because we parade around the school for a significant part of the celebration.  It is important that we are able to recognize student faces and keep students safe while outside of the school.  Please also remember to choose costumes that do not stereotype, demean, or make fun of other people.  Students who are not participating in the festivities are welcome to join our Fall Harvest Party.  Please contact your child's teacher for more information about that event.

Second Step This Week  Skills for Learning include focus attention, listen, be assertive, and use self-talk

The Second Step curriculum teaches our students important life skills. Please take a moment to talk about and practice these skills as a family by reading your child's "home link" for this week.  The grade levels that have home links this week are: Third Grade- Showing Compassion  Fourth Grade- Showing Compassion  Fifth Grade- Introducing Emotion Management
