Reading

The curriculum used is called Reading Units of Study and aligns with the Common Core State Standards.
  • Unit 1: Second-Grade Reading Growth Spurt
  • Unit 2: Becoming Experts: Reading Nonfiction
  • Unit 3: Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power
  • Unit 4: Series Book Clubs (children work within book clubs to study author’s craft to understand ways authors use word choice, figurative language, and punctuation)
Students in second grade also have opportunities to learn through stories read out loud as well as stories read together to help strengthen comprehension skills as well as fluency.

Writing

Students learn through Lucy Calkin's Writing Units of Study.  These are the following units:
  • Unit 1: Lessons from Masters: Improving Narrative Craft (Narrative Writing)
  • Unit 2: Lab Reports and Science Books
  • Unit 3: Writin About Reading
  • Unit 4: Big Thoughts in Small Packages
Students develop spelling though Words Their Way which consists of words that are sorted by common spelling patterns.  Students also have opportunities to develop their grammar skills through their writing during small group and one-on-one conferences.
