In an effort to deepen our understanding of the 10 IB Learner Profile Traits, every month each team of teachers nominates a maximum of two students to honor as the IB Student of the Month. The advisory themed activities drive what teachers look for and who they honor. For example, in September we focused on becoming knowledgeable about Brooks Middle School, the MYP, and all ten Learner Profile Traits. We also asked our students to reflect on what they do well and set goals for their first trimester. Students were determined by staff observation, individual and collaborative work, and discussion. The students that best portrayed the two highlighted Learner Profile Traits that month, Knowledgeable and Reflective, were nominated.
Students have a choice of rewards they've earned, ranging from lunch with a favorite teacher, an elevator pass for one day, 5 extra points toward any summative assessment, a free ID purchase, etc. You can imagine which choice has been the most popular!
A student component to nominating began second trimester. There are QR codes posted throughout the school that direct students to a Google form. They are prompted to nominate a student from any grade that they feel has displayed exemplary actions in any of the traits we seek. They can nominate as many of their peers as many times as they'd like. Those names go into a raffle and smaller prizes (IB pins and school supplies) are distributed monthly as well.
