Middle Matters from the Week of January 11, 2016

Brooks Family:

Back in the swing of things and we have a 4 day weekend approaching! As a staff we have been reading excerpts of Instructional Rounds. One of the themes in our reading is that the student must play a bigger role in the classroom in order for true learning to emerge. We are aiming to create learning environments that give students the opportunity to do something meaningful.

Attendance Number

Because our original number was too close to the direct line of a district employee, we needed to change it. The new Brooks Attendance Line is 708-665-3074

Food Allergy information

The most severe allergic reaction is anaphylaxis- a life-threatening whole-body allergic reaction that can impair breathing, cause a dramatic drop in blood pressure and affect heart rate. Anaphylaxis can come on within minutes of exposure to the trigger food. It can be fatal and must be treated promptly with an injection of epinephrine (adrenaline).

Symptoms of an allergic reaction may involve the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, the cardiovascular system and the respiratory tract. They can manifest in one or more of the following ways:

  • Flushing of the skin.
  • Rash on the body.
  • Swelling of the throat and mouth.
  • Difficulty swallowing and speaking.
  • Severe asthma.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Drop in blood pressure.
  • Collapse and unconsciousness.
