Middle Matters Week of Sept. 5th 2016

 Good Afternoon Brooks Families:

One week down and 38 to go. :-) Thanks so much for your support and patience during our first week of school.

"Books are meat and medicine and flame and flight and flower, steel, stitch, cloud and clout, and drumbeats on the air." - Gwendolyn Brooks

When I read that, I replace "books are" with "Teachers and Parents are" or "School is". We are the fabric that holds the world together

No School - Labor Day (9/5)

Street Crossing Safety

Please remind your students to only cross at Kenilworth Ave. where the crossing guard is or Home Street, where the light is. Students try to cross at Clinton, and this is very dangerous. We have a person at that corner directing buses that turn onto Clinton, but she can miss the random student darting across Washington.

Health Rotations and Curriculum

To help you and your student understand the the Health rotations, I have attached a document to explain the "minis". As many of you may know, we also added health to 6th grade. For your review, I have attached the Health syllabus for all grades. If you have questions, please contact Ms. Harrington ([email protected])

WIN Explanation

We have received a few questions regarding the "What I Need/WIN" period. This portion of the day was designed to provide students with the appropriate level of support and enrichment throughout the school year. The goal is to provide your student "what they need".

Your student may have a STEM course on their schedule...this means they will get their WIN in Trimesters 2 & 3.

What we are doing in WIN for the first 6 weeks...

6th Grade: Growth Mindset, Organizational Skills, Problem Solving
7th Grade: Interview Skills, Organizational Skills, Plotting your life, Visions Boarding
8th Grade: "The Last Lecture". Read more about it HERE
2016-17 Curriculum Night (9/15)

We are hosting our annual Curriculum Night on Thursday 9/15. You will receive PowerSchool and Canvas info as well as meet your student's teachers and learn about their classes. Please find the flyer attached.

Picture Day (9/9)

Students will take pictures this Friday (9/9).

Allow me to introduce...

Mr. Steve Olson from our STEM department and Ms. Christiana Harrington , our new IB Coordinator. Please take a moment to read their bios.

Yours in education,
