Middle Matters Week of Sept. 12th 2016

Good Afternoon Brooks Families:

Thanks to all of you who came out to the first PTO meeting of the school year. I shared the Brooks Theory of Action with parents as well as my Professional Development Plan for the school year. This is a learning environment for all and as educators, we should be the "lead learners" showing our students that ever important growth mindset. Have a great week!

Advisory/SEL this week:

This week in advisory, students will work on empathy and communication skills. Success both in an out of school requires the ability to work well with others. Communication skills like listening and respecting others' ideas are essential. Please be sure to ask you student about their advisory lesson when they get home.

MAP Testing

We will begin MAP Testing this week. Please see the schedule attached. If you have questions, fee free to contact the grade level assistant principal.

6th grade = Ms. Capuder ([email protected])

7th grade = Ms. Reed ([email protected])

8th grade = Ms. Klein ([email protected])

Cinch Sacs:

The PTO will be selling cinch sacs for $10 during lunch periods next week. As a staff, we are enforcing the carrying of cinch sacs only during the school day. This reduces clutter in the classroom and increases hallway safety.

Brooks Curriculum Night (9/15)

We are hosting our annual Curriculum Night this Thursday 9/15. Please arrive by 5:45pm so that you can get to Advisory on time. You will receive PowerSchool and Canvas info as well as meet your student's teachers and learn about their classes. This is intended to be for parents only, but students are welcome if necessary. Please find the flyer attached.

Strengthening Families:

Presence Behavioral Health is hosting an 11-Week Parenting program that focuses on parenting skills, conflict resolution, stress management and much more. The sessions would be at Julian in the Media center from 6:00 pm to 7:30pm. Staff from Presence will facilitate the sessions along with dinner, childcare, and transportation. See the attached flyer for more information.

OPRF Marching Huskies

8th graders from the Brooks Band Program will be participating in the OPRF Marching Huskies 8th Grade Night on Friday, Sept. 16th as part of the OPRFHS Home Varsity Football game at 6 p.m. Approximately 70 students from Brooks, Roosevelt and Julian Middle Schools will be a part of the Marching Huskies by performing on the field during the pregame show and playing pep band tunes in the stands during the varsity football game. This event is a great way for our 8th grade students to learn about the band program at OPRFHS and make great social connections with high school students as well as 8th graders from our other feeder schools.

Allow me to introduce...

Mr. Miles Lee from our 7th grade Language Arts Team and Mr. Joseph Casanovas , from our 8th grade Math Team.
