In 2015-16, students and teachers will become digital creators who will use the rare items from the Ernest Hemingway archives in conjunction with project-based digital learning lessons to get a unique look at Hemingway, his local ties and his literary contributions.
Back in January, the Oak Park Public Library announced its ‘"Hacking Hemingway: Cracking the Code to the Vault" initiative, made possible by a grant the Illinois Secretary of State to digitize Illinois history.
The library is partnering with Oak Park Elementary School District 97 on the development of a participatory digital initiative that will provide students and teachers from Brooks Middle School with access to never-before-digitized Hemingway artifacts. This initiative, which is scheduled to begin during the 2015-16 school year, will transform students and teachers into digital creators who will use the rare items from the archive in conjunction with project-based digital learning lessons that will offer a unique look at Hemingway, his local ties and his literary contributions.
Teachers and parent leaders were able to get an early look at the archives at a reception on February 27. There were over 60 Brooks staff members in attendance! Looking ahead to 2015-16, we are excited to use these artifacts to give our middle school students an intimate view into Ernest Hemingway’s life and era.
