The terrorist attacks at the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris on January 7 prompted students in Ms. Lohman’s French classes at Brooks to create a shrine to honor those who were killed in the attacks. Students wanted to unite in support of free speech and freedom of the press (which are akin to France’s free speech laws in the ‘Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme’).

Their shrine included “Je suis Charlie” signs, pens, pencils, drawings, quotes, flags, candles, an Eiffel Tower made out of pencils by 6th grader Brynn Tran, and a dozen colorful oragami fleurs-de-lys flowers made by 7th grader Emma Roskopf.
