"Books are meat and medicine and flame and flight and flower, steel, stitch, cloud and clout, and drumbeats on the air."
- Gwendolyn Brooks
When you read that quote, what word(s) can you replace "books" with?
Columbus Day (10/12)
Just a reminder that tomorrow is a non-school day.
Starting with "Why"
We engaged in a significant amount of professional learning this past week. We are grounding ourselves in our "WHY." We watched Simon Sinek's TED Talk to inspire our thoughts and actions. Why do we have Teacher Leaders, Why do meet as a faculty frequently, WHY are we grouped in Teams, Why is parent involvement important? Join our conversation on Padlet; we would love to have your thoughts.
Parent Teacher Conferences
On Thursday, October 22, from 12:35 - 8pm, Gwendolyn Brooks Middle School will hold student-led portfolio conferences. We believe that student involvement in the conference provides opportunities for students to self-reflect, evaluate their performance and encourages students to accept responsibility for their learning. Please see conference letter for more information and to sign up for a time slot.
Zero Waste
Brooks is kicking off our Zero Waste Program November 30th. We will have Resource Sorting Stations in the lunch room as well as Water Bottle Accessible fountains. Thanks to Ms. Harrington for her coordination and efforts we will have a more eco-friendly building. We will be looking for Parent Volunteers to help our students get excited about recycling during lunch as well as help with sorting for the first week of implementation. More info to come!!
Sibshops
Sibshops is a program specially designed for brothers and sisters of kids with special needs, which can include physical and developmental disabilities or emotional and mental health challenges. Sibshops are for 3rd-8th grade siblings and consist of activity-based workshops that celebrate the many contributions made by these children. If younger kids are interested, we will take them on a space available basis. The fall Sibshops will be held on Saturdays, 12 - 2 pm, on October 24, November 21 and December 5, at the River Forest Community Center Center, 8020 Madison, River Forest. Learn more about Sibshops.
