Middle Matters News from the Week of September 28, 2015

Read more from the nurse, check out the Canvas calendar feature, and remember key discipline details.

Another great week at Brooks! Continue to engage in conversation with your student about school. Instead of asking "do you have any homework?" (because they do), try asking "Think back on your day, what was one high point in your day and one low point?" or "What was one thing that you learned today that you didn't know yesterday?" or "What methods are you using to stay organized?" Staying connected is the key to your child's success.

A Note from the Nurse
REMINDER: If your child becomes sick while at school and calls you via cell phone to be picked up, they still must be seen by the school nurse before you sign them out. This will allow us to keep track of illnesses and provide direction on whether your child can return to school the following day. Ms. Dawe can be reached at 708-524-3058.

Canvas Use
Did you know that if you use the "Calendar" section of Canvas, you can see all of your student's assignments in one place? This is an easy way of keeping track of their studies (see photo below). We appreciate your continued patience as we update iPads and settle in to the school year.

Discipline Reminders
Below are a few things that we would like families to talk to students about.

  • No backpacks (students should carry a cinch sac between classes)
  • Students must wear their IDs
  • No cell phone use during the school day
  • Class starts promptly at 9:00 AM, so students should be here by 8:50 AM
  • Please call the attendance office for absences at 708-665-3061
  • Get to know the assistant principals - I am so lucky to have these three leaders on my team. They are truly dynamic. Read about Ms. Klein (8th), Ms. Reed (7th) and Ms. Capuder (6th).

A Peek into My Leadership Style...
Most people/institutions have a way of doing things. Mine is grounded in the following principles. 1) focused on Equity, 2) Problem Solving approach, 3) Strengths Based perspective, 4) grounded in Data and Research, 5) build school based Capacity, and 6) valuing Collaboration. The principles live in our work, for example, through clear meeting norms and the use of protocols to support evidenced-based discussions. We use protocols and establish norms because they create a structure that makes it safe to ask challenging, substantive questions of each other while supporting equity of each person’s voice.
