Message from October 11, 2019

Thank you to our parents who helped out with the Great Apple Crunch this week! It was great to see our students enjoying local produce and making the connection between farm and table. We also had a great time celebrating hispanic heritage this week. Gracias a Sra. Bruno for planning the fun activities.

Hopefully you’ve been reading a bit about Second Step on our website. If you’d like to hear more about the Social Emotional Learning curriculum at Hatch and our Positive Behavior Intervention Systems (PBIS), we will be hosting an info session during our next PTO meeting on Tuesday, October 15th from 8-8:30am in the lunchroom. We hope to see you there!

You may have already received communication from your child’s teacher regarding conferences, which will be held the week of October 24th. Our amazing PTO will be providing child care on our late night, Thursday the 24th from 12:30-7pm. Students will be dismissed at 10:55am both Thursday the 24th and Friday the 25th. While you are here for conferences, please take a moment to check the Lost and Found. All items not claimed will be donated to families in need after conference week. Also, please write your child’s name in any item that might find its way to the Lost and Found.

The Fall Celebration is at the end of this month. We encourage food free celebrations. However, if room parents plan to serve food as part of the classroom celebration, the food plan must be submitted to Nurse Rossi via e-mail no later than October 17th.  If you have not submitted a plan by October 17th, then it is assumed that no food will be served at the celebration. The food chosen should be from the approved food list.  Please let Nurse Rossi know as soon as possible what you plan to serve. Thank you so much for your patience and cooperation to ensure that we have a safe celebration for all of our children!

Our goal in District 97 is to create a positive learning environment where all students, staff and families feel a sense of belonging. In that spirit, we have put together information and resources regarding culturally sensitive Halloween costumes. We appreciate families being proactive with their children in making thoughtful costume choices. Click here for more information >

Every child should be able to experience the joy and tradition of trick-or-treating on Halloween. But kids with food allergies are often left out of the fun, since most candy is off limits. FAREs Teal Pumpkin Project helps make sure all children will come home on Halloween night with something they can enjoy. It just takes ONE simple act: offering non-food treats, such as glow sticks, pencils or small toys, as an alternative to candy. The Teal Pumpkin Project raises awareness of food allergies and promotes a safer, happier Halloween by encouraging households to make non-food treats available so that trick-or-treaters who need to avoid candy - due to food allergies or other reasons - can fully participate. Households can show they are participating by placing a teal pumpkin in front of their home. Working together, we can keep children with food allergies safe and included this Halloween season.

Be sure to check out the latest updated from the District 97 Libraries!

Just a reminder to keep filling out your Chipotle Reading Log. We are halfway through this reading challenge! Please return your log to the Hatch Library during the week of October 21st to receive their coupon. All logs must be turned in by Friday, October 25th. The coupon expires on 10-30-19. If you have any questions please reach out to Mrs. Howe.

The next regularly scheduled District 97 Board of Education meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the boardroom of the administration building (260 Madison Street). Families are invited to hear an update on recent changes to the district's GTD (Gifted, Talented and Differentiation) services to increase access to math enrichment for all students. The administration will also update the board on the implementation of the Illinois Accelerated Placement Act.

We're looking for a few more students interested in spending their lunch hour engaging in some world language fun on Tuesdays as part of the PTO world language enrichment program.  We currently need one more French student and four more German students to run our programs successfully this year.  Already in the program?  Consider recruiting a friend.  The program runs November - April.  You can register by completing this form and sending payment via check.  If you have questions, please don't hesitate to contact Christine Wehman [email protected] 773.575.1638.  Merci, gracias & danke.

Call for OPEF Science Alliance Scientist volunteer at Hatch! The Oak Park Education Foundation runs the long-standing Science Alliance program. A volunteer scientist visits a classroom 3 to 5 times throughout the year and brings a hands-on interactive activity to the class for an hour each visit. Sometimes the scientist offers a field trip at the end of the year. Hatch participates at the 5th grade level. The science curriculum in 5th is focused on Earth & Sun (Astronomy), Living Systems (Anatomy), and Mixtures/Solutions (Chemistry) but it need not necessarily align. Most 5th grade partnerships focus on the brain or lungs. If you are interested,  please contact Heather Guido, [email protected].
