IRVING-RELATED: NEW

IRVING PACERS

Pacers started back up Thursday, September 12th and the kids were so happy!  Pacers is Irving's very own weekly 'running club' when the weather is nice.  The kiddos come out of the school during their lunch/recess time and run around the perimeter of the school [Cuyler to Harvard, Harvard to Ridgeland, Ridgeland to Fillmore, Fillmore to Cuyler and back around].  Three laps around the school equals one mile and a foot charm.

In order for this program to be successful, we need parent volunteers to supervise the students as they run. Sign up here to learn more and help us run this very important program.

IRVING-RELATED: PBIS, SOCIAL EMOTIONAL, & SECOND STEP

SECOND STEP

This is our second week of Second Step lessons. This week our kindergarten and first grade students learned the skills for focusing attention, our second grade students learned skills for focusing attention and listening, our third grade students learned how to use self-talk, and our fourth and fifth grade students talked about ways to listen with attention. The kindergarten, first grade, fourth grade, and fifth grade students have home links this week to follow up on the skills learned in the classroom.

If you have any questions or comments, please refer to our PBIS webpage or email me.

EAGLE'S NEST

Today our entire Irving School community kicked off our Eagle’s Nest Program. This is a social emotional program that we started last year. During Eagle’s Nest, which is typically the first Friday of every month, Irving Families will get together to complete different activities focused on belonging and inclusion at Irving School.  An Irving Family is a group of students from all different classrooms and grade levels that meet throughout the year. We have 39 families made up of about 12 to 13 kindergarten through fifth grade students. Each family is led by a different Irving staff member.  Our goal is for students to stay with the same family during their K to 5 experience, but sometimes there are changes, such as new staff or new sections.

Today during Eagle’s Nest we:

  • Met our families
  • Made a name for our family
  • Developed a secret handshake
  • Got a certificate
  • Took a group photo

Our next Eagle’s Nest will be October 4th!

NEWS FROM THE PTO

PTO MEETING: OCTOBER 3RD @ 7PM

(LEARNING SESSION: POSITIVE BEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS & SUPPORTS)

Our next PTO meeting will be held on October 3rd at 7pm.  During our learning session, Irving staff will be presenting on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) at Irving.  Have you heard your child talk about the 3 Be’s (be respectful, be responsible, and be safe), Eagle Slips, or Second Step? These are part of PBIS which is a data-driven decision making framework for establishing the social culture and behavior supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students and staff.  This includes providing maximum structure, setting expectations and rules, increasing student engagement, acknowledging appropriate behavior, and responding to inappropriate.

Please attend this PTO meeting to learn more about PBIS at Irving.
