International Baccalaureate – Statement of Inquiry

The IB Middle Years Program emphasizes the power of “the big picture.” This means that teachers work to collaboratively develop a single, central statement for each unit that captures and reflects what’s so important about what students are learning. This is called the statement of inquiry. This statement represents the greater learning our students achieve through our content, leaving a permanent mark of knowing and understanding that will continue to develop throughout their lives. Please click on the grade level statements of inquiry below to get a sense of what our students are learning about during the 1st trimester.

Advisory Olympics Kicks Off Next Week

Why Advisory Olympics?

  • Build intentional community among students and staff through shared activities.
  • Create a sense of belonging within Julian.
  • Student focus groups unanimously state that advisory Olympics is a very engaging aspect of their learning experience at Julian.
  • It’s fun.

How it Works:

On certain advisory days, classes have "Duels" against each other that consist of a "game" that both teachers agree upon. Some duels have included the following: pictionary, charades, scavenger hunt, a dance off, music trivia, wiffle ball, jump rope contest, a plank race, team jenga, relay race, paper airplane toss and many others. Advisory classes earn points by winning duels. Additional ways for advisory classes to accumulate points include participating in service learning projects throughout the school year and dressing in pink for our anti-bullying day.

End of the Year Celebration:

At the end of the year, the top 8 ranked advisories at each grade level will compete in a final tournament in the gym or auditorium. The rest of the grade will watch as these teams battle it out for the glory. The winning Advisory will get to sign their name on the Cup and forever be a part of Julian History.

Student Led Parent/Teacher Conference – Thursday, October 25

Families will be receiving information from their student's grade level team leader to sign up for student led parent/teacher conferences. You will get an email from SignUp.com that will enable you to schedule a conference with your student's teacher. Our students lead these conferences. Over the next few weeks, they will spend some time considering the following International Baccalaureate Approaches to Learning Skill: organization, communication, being reflective, and affective skills. Students will complete a reflection form that will be the focal point of the conference. They will be collecting work samples from their classes to share during the conference. Students will also have a pre-meeting with their conferencing teacher in order to ensure that they are prepared and ready to lead this important meeting.
