Meet Mrs. Nelson!

Hi, I'm Mrs. Nelson!  This is my 20th year of teaching, and all of those years have been at Longfellow!  I taught 5th grade for 7 years and this will be my 13th year of teaching 3rd grade.  I am a District 97 alum myself, having attended Lincoln Elementary School and Emerson Junior High (now Brooks Middle School.) I attended high school at OPRF and then went on to college at the University of Illinois.  Go Illini!  I also earned a master's degree in reading at Concordia University.

I am from Oak Park, and still live in the community with my husband, Jeremiah, and my 4 year old son, Jay.  In my free time, I enjoy taking walks around town, spending time with my family and friends, planning parties and other events, watching White Sox games, and checking out local restaurants and coffee shops.

I am looking forward to working together to navigate the challenges and celebrate all of the many successes that this new school year will bring.

Professional Involvement: Longfellow Third Grade Team Leader, Oak Park Teachers' Association Building Representative, Illinois Education Association Virtual Instructional Coach/Mentor to New Teachers, Longfellow Career Day Committee Member

Professional Growth and Recognition: National Board Certified Teacher Candidate, 2023 Illinois State Board of Education "Those Who Excel" Meritorious Service in Teaching award winner

A few of my favorite things......The Chicago White Sox, Fall weather, Diet Coke, fancy coffee, gathering with friends, planning parties and other events, dogs, shopping at Target, trying new restaurants and returning to old favorites, decorating for various holidays/seasons, and of course: teaching!
