Evan Jacobson standing in front of an instrument

Hello and welcome to the Hatch School music page!  My name is Evan Jacobson and I am the general music teacher, choral director and steel band director at Hatch.  I grew up in Oak Park and have been teaching music at Hatch since 2010.  I hold a bachelors degree from Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin) in music education and trombone performance.  In 2023, I completed a masters degree from Northern Illinois University in steelpan peformance and pedagogy.  In addition to teaching, I perform regularly on trombone and steelpan with bands around the Chicago area.

In music class, students learn through singing, moving, listening, reading, and playing instruments.  Students will have experience playing Orff xylophones, steelpans, hand/stick drums and other unpitched percussion, recorders, ukuleles, and harmonicas.  All students K-5 will have two 30-minute music classes per week.  In addtion, D97 also offers instrumental music (band/orchestra), chorus, and steel band, which you can learn about on this page.

I love teaching children of all ages, and facilitating opportunities to make music together!  You can reach me directly at [email protected].
