On Friday, January 23, friends and leaders from throughout the community will be reading to students at Holmes Elementary School in conjunction with the school’s Guest Reader Day. This event is a special part of Holmes' Annual Rocket into Reading Program.
The school launches its extracurricular reading incentive program the Friday before winter break. Students are encouraged to read up until Gues Reader Day and track the time they spend doing so. The time spent reading is represented by rockets and stars that students fill out and parent volunteers post on the Flight Progress Board near the front office.
There is a prize for the student who reads the most during break, as well as ones for the classroom at each grade level and the classroom school wide with the most hours read. The student who read the most over break this year was Rebecca Gutierrez from Ms. Manuel's fifth grade class. She earned a "Star Reader" certificate and $20 gift card to the Book Table for the 60 hours she spent reading. The winners of the classroom prizes will be announced at a later date.
