Movie and Pizza Fundraiser

The Integrated Studies class at Brooks Middle School has been focusing its attention this year on the following three issues related to citizenship:

1. What is a citizen and what are a citizen's rights and responsibilities?
2. What does it mean to be a good citizen (helping others in your community)?
3. What does it mean to be a global citizen (being aware of and helping communities throughout the world)?

As part of their lessons on citizenship, the teachers have looked for ways to provide their students with opportunities to experience firsthand what it means to be a good global citizen. One the opportunities Phyllis Frick identified for her students was to aid the efforts being led by the Amari Borah, the husband of fellow Brooks teacher Cynthia Borah, to build a well for Shanzu Village in Kenya, which is where he is from. To date, they have dug down 64 feet and tapped into water. They have also built a concrete cover for the well. However, they still need $600 to line the entire well with concrete. When Ms. Frick’s students learned about the project, they brainstormed ways to raise the money to line the well. They ultimately settled on a pizza and movie night, which is being held at Brooks on March 13, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. You can access additional information about the event by going here.
