"We Are D97" is a profile series that highlights the tremendous work being done across the district to advance our vision, achieve our goals, and create a strong sense of community and belonging.
When District 97 administrators walked into Michaela Ruff’s classroom in October, they had a big surprise for her: she was named the district's first "We Are D97" award recipient of the 2026-27 school year!
Nominated by two district parents, Ms. Ruff was recognized for her outstanding work with students and families, and her welcoming and enthusiastic spirit. District 97 Superintendent Terri Bresnahan shared remarks during the presentation and was joined by Hatch Principal Sarah Mendez, district administrators, Hatch teachers and students, and Ms. Ruff’s husband, who was in on the surprise thanks to Hatch staff.
“Not only is Ms. Ruff an incredible art teacher, she also is the most welcoming and caring person for all of her students and their families,” one of the nominations read. “Ms. Ruff has helped build a genuine love of art in her students—not just an appreciation for art class, but a curiosity about art that follows them outside of school.”
After working with Ms. Ruff, the parent said students “talked about artists at home and made connections between what they were learning and the world around them.”
Another parent wrote that the kids light up when they see her, and she has been a "safe" person for many of them. Another special thing the parent remembered was that Ms. Ruff mailed handwritten thank-you postcards to students after receiving a holiday or end-of-year gift.
“Those postcards became cherished little keepsakes because they made [my student] feel recognized and appreciated,” the nomination read.
“She consistently goes above and beyond” - Hatch Principal Sarah Mendez
Hatch Principal Sarah Mendez said she was incredibly proud to see Ms. Ruff recognized for the meaningful impact she makes not only in the classroom but in the larger community.
“Through her creativity, compassion, and commitment to equity and inclusion, she creates opportunities for students to express themselves, share their unique perspectives, and see themselves reflected in their learning environment. She embodies the vision and values of our district and Hatch Elementary, reminding us that when every student feels a sense of belonging, they are empowered to learn, grow, and thrive,” Principal Mendez said.
“I was born to be an art teacher.” - Michaela Ruff
Ms. Ruff has taught art for 20 years, with 10 years at District 97 schools including Hatch, Longfellow, Holmes, Mann and Irving.
“My hope and dream for my students is for them to grow confidence in the art room that they carry with them for the rest of their life. I want them to get excited if they recognize an artist, material or style of art that they never paid attention to before. I also want them to know that they are loved, they belong and that my art room is a safe space where all are welcome.”
She said she is inspired by the energy and excitement her student-artists have to explore different materials “and open their eyes to the incredible world of art all around them.”
“I feel extremely lucky to have found this district and school. My students are my most favorite part of each day! Having them for six years allows me to build connections with their entire family and see each kid grow not only artistically but also as a global citizen. Watching their skills develop throughout our time together is truly special!”
Ms. Ruff added that being recognized is a memory she will carry in her heart forever.
“I feel so lucky I get to wake up every day and do this job. Thank you families and D97 for taking the time to make us feel loved and appreciated, and that we belong, too.”
