The Irving W.O.R.M. (Working On Reading in the Morning) Club is offered in the school's library Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. The program, which runs from October to April, is for first, second and third graders who need additional support in the areas of oral reading fluency and/or reading comprehension. It is staffed by community members, staff, current and former older students, and parents/guardians who volunteer their time to work with our young learners. Each student who takes part in the program is paired with a volunteer who helps them read a book at their level and then take an online quiz about it. The books and computer program we use are from Accelerated Reader. First graders will also work on sight word cards and basic phonics skills. In the spring, we hold an annual breakfast to thank our volunteers for their help and support.
