Art Class!
Welcome to the Mann Art Room! Students in kindergarten through fifth grade explore drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, fibers, printmaking, digital art, and more while learning about artists, artworks, cultures, and ideas from around the world.
In art class, students are encouraged to experiment, make thoughtful choices, take creative risks, solve problems, and develop their own ideas. Our goal is not for every artwork to look the same. It is for every student to grow as an artist and thinker.

About Mr. Schmidt
I am the K–5 art teacher at Horace Mann Elementary School and a National Board Certified Teacher in Art. I began teaching in District 97 in 2009 as a traveling art teacher serving Mann, Lincoln, Longfellow, and Holmes. I have been part of the Mann community since that first year and am excited to begin my 18th year of teaching.
I believe elementary art should give every child opportunities to create, explore materials, develop skills, encounter many kinds of artists and ideas, and discover that their own voice belongs in the art room.
Grades 4–5: 2026–27 Project Dates
- Trimester 1: The trimester ends November 20, 2026. Projects are due no later than December 4, 2026.
- Trimester 2: The trimester ends March 5, 2027. Projects are due no later than March 12, 2027.
- Trimester 3: The trimester ends June 9, 2027. Projects are due no later than June 2, 2027.
